Liang Wenbo has recovered to defeat Judd Trump and Tom Ford this week and that resolve may be required against Marco Fu.
Fu’s form has been immaculate – he ousted Shaun Murphy in round four – although he has lost his last nine quarter-finals.
That includes at this tournament 12 months ago, although the 37-year-old feels well placed to progress this time around.
“I got a bit carried away last year and didn’t really recover,” said Fu.
“There’s still a long way to go and I’m looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”
1/2 – Neil Robertson to beat John Higgins
John Higgins is playing well enough to beat Neil Robertson and reach the UK Championship semi-final for the first time in five years.
Robertson produced the best performance of any player this tournament by knocking out Stephen Maguire 6-1 in the previous round.
The Australian, though, is aware of Higgins’ talent – especially having lost five of their previous six meetings.
“I’m playing the player of the season so far,” said Robertson.
“We’ve had a lot of great games – especially on the BBC – and I’m sure everyone watching will really enjoy it.”
2/9 – Mark Selby to beat Matthew Selt
Mark Selby returned to his best against Dechawat Poomjaeng in the last 32 and is poised to make the semi-finals.
Selby has beaten quarter-final opponent Matthew Selt in their three previous encounters and is confident of making it four.
“If I play like I know I can, I’ll be confident of getting through,” said the world No. 1.
Selt, however, is not fazed at facing the game’s highest-ranked player.
“It’s an occasion I’ll relish,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s about time I stuck in a performance against him.”
30/100 – Martin Gould to beat David Grace
David Grace has already achieved the best result of his career, but it will be difficult for him to defeat Martin Gould and progress into the semi-finals.
Gould has won their previous two meetings and produced one of the performances of the event by knocking out Mark Allen in the last 32.
“David’s played well all week, but this is new territory for him,” said the Pinner Potter.
“He’s a lovely guy off the table, so I’ve got to forget about all that and do another good job.”
