Los Angeles Dodgers to beat Washington Nationals
The Dodgers lost their last game to the Oakland Athletics but remain top of the NL West with a 5-2 record and look very much the favourites to win the World Series again.
LA went 21-9 at Dodger Stadium last season and should get off to a good start in its home opener against Washington on Friday. The Nationals are 1-2 so far after starting their season late, and lost their last two games to the Atlanta Braves.
Starting for Washington will be Joe Ross, who has only come into the rotation as Patrick Corbin and Jon Lester are on the IL. Ross opted out last season and went 4-4 in 2019 with a 5.48 ERA.
He faces a tough task against likely Cy Young contender Walker Buehler, who pitched six innings in a win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, giving up two runs.
Philadelphia Phillies to beat Atlanta Braves
The Phillies and Braves met in a three-game series last week, with Philadelphia managing to win all three games by limiting Atlanta’s offense to just three runs in total.
Philadelphia is now 5-1 for the season following an 8-2 win over the New York Mets, while the Braves are 2-4.
Zach Wheeler pitched seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season, giving up just one hit as the Phillies beat the Braves 4-0.
On the other end of that defeat was Charlie Morton, who gave up three runs on six hits before being yanked at the end of the fifth inning.
Given how the two pitchers performed in that game – and how their teams have looked this season –the Phillies are an easy pick here.
Houston Astros to beat Oakland Athletics
The Astros’ 6-1 record is the best in baseball so far this season, and they should maintain their hot start in the second meeting of a three-game series against Oakland.
The Athletics lost 6-2 to Houston on Thursday night and are now 1-6, having also been swept 4-0 by the Astros to open the season.
Oakland has allowed at least eight runs in four of its five games against Houston this season, and its offense is yet to score more than five runs in a game in 2021.
Taking the mound for Houston will be Lance McCullers Jr., who took the win in a 9-1 victory over Oakland to start the season, allowing just two hits in five innings.
He faces Sean Manaea, who was pulled in the fifth inning of his first start after giving up five runs on six hits.
Cincinnati Reds to beat Arizona Diamondbacks
After losing their first game of the season, the Reds have won five in a row. They scored nine runs or more in four of those victories, including a 12-1 win over the St Louis Cardinals and a 14-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They should keep their run going against an Arizona team that has gone 2-5 this season and has only scored four runs or more in two of those games.
Tyler Mahle will be on the mound for the Reds following a win in his first start, in which he gave up three runs in five innings.
Arizona starter Taylor Widener performed well in his only start so far this season, allowing no runs across six innings in a win over the San Diego Padres, but the red-hot Cincinnati offense could be too much for him to overcome.
