Richard Hoiles’ Horse Tracker: My horses to follow

Added on 29 August 2023. Hung badly left when asked for his effort in the Melrose and looked to be feeling the fast ground. He has a cycling-type action and cut in the ground now looks important. He is still eligible for 0-80s and should find conditions more to his liking in the autumn. He remains unexposed over staying trips.

Added on 26 September 2023. Finished third at Sandown at a big price, and it’s always worth taking note when one of Alan King’s two-year-olds runs well on debut. If he makes the usual improvement, he should be capable of winning a small race next time.

Added on 14 November 2023. Managed to finish third at Kempton despite rather taking control of his rider in the early stages. If he can be settled better next time then he is another who looks well in on his Flat form. Neil Mulholland seemed to improve him in that sphere when he joined the yard and it is likely that he can do the same over hurdles.

Added on 3 October 2023. Caught the eye in no uncertain terms when finishing fifth in a maiden at Newmarket. She took a while to work out what was required but made really good progress through the final two furlongs and has a pedigree that cries out for her being even more effective over a longer trip.

Added on 21 August 2023. Travelled notably strongly towards the rear of a race at Newbury on 19 August, but sitting so far back meant he would need a clean passage through that he didn’t get. He only got a 2lb rise for his Sandown win and still looks well-treated.

Added on 5 September 2023. Had to work too hard early to get across from a wide gate at Sandown on 2 September so did well to see things out as well as he did in finishing fourth. While he holds a Cambridgeshire entry, he also held an Ebor one, and he can progress again upped to 1m 4f.

Added on 14 November 2023. Had experience of fences as a young horse in France and, back over the larger obstacles at Wincanton, really impressed with the way he jumped, which is a big asset for a horse rated less than 120. He got a bit weary up the straight but, with this run under his belt and the Venetia Williams yard really getting going, he looks the sort that can run up a sequence in the next few weeks.

Added on 22 November 2023. Was sent off favourite for her second career start at Lingfield but got no sort of run at a crucial stage. She ran well on debut at Goodwood, which I always think is a very tricky track for horses making their first career starts. She is bred to stay well and the 10f maidens are generally less competitive than their shorter counterparts.

Added on 29 November 2023. Caught everyone’s eye on his third run under an inexperienced rider at Lingfield. A mark of 70 may be harsh on the bare form, but there seemed to be any amount of potential improvement which William Haggas can exploit.

Added on 17 October 2023. Made late headway on his debut at Kempton. He looked raw in the paddock and going down but produced solid late progress in a race which favoured those close to the speed. Getting sucked into late headway horses can be risky, but this looked a bit different in terms of physical and mental development and he should go well next time.

Added on 10 October 2023. Stuck impressively to his task having been headed when finishing third at Salisbury last time. He may have been quite well placed as regards the overall tempo, but he really looked a big, strong horse who should definitely be open to improvement. He looks certain to stay at least 10f and win races.

Added on 17 October 2023. Taken off after his last Ffos Las win but is now put back in. A mark of 84 and proved beyond him at York last time but that should now persuade connections to go juvenile hurdling. He was gelded prior to Ffos Las and has schooled over obstacles, and will hopefully run sooner rather than later.

Added on 14 November 2023. Made his chasing debut at Kempton over what looked to be an inadequate trip. He jumped soundly enough but was always just on the back foot keeping on steadily to finish second. A step up to 3 miles should see him go well next time for in form Emma Lavelle.

Added on 10 November 2023. Travelled well in finishing second at Stratford and, prior to that run, had also run second in a race at Perth that has worked out particularly strongly. He has been put 4lb to 81 but that is still a basement mark and a return to 2m 4f would also be a plus.

Added on 26 September 2023. Was left clear at the last but looked to have the race in safe keeping when winning at Plumpton on his first start for Chris Gordon. Paul Henderson had a quiet final couple of seasons before giving up his license, and the tracker will be keeping a close eye on any of his horses that have switched over to Chris in the weeks to come.

Added on 10 November 2023. Finished second to Colonel Harry in a three-runner novice chase at Chepstow. He jumped soundly and was not knocked about when headed. Hopefully he can reward the kindness with a victory or two in novice handicaps.

Added on 3 October 2023. Ran really well in the Cambridgeshire after doing best of those who raced away from the stands-side group. He does seem to prefer decent ground, so time may be running out, but he is added until the end of the turf season.

Added on 22 November 2023. Caught the eye under a very negative ride at Taunton on Thursday 16 November. It was a very shallow race, but it was a big stable change and he is going to show a lot more at some stage down the line. This may be after he gets a handicap mark after two more runs, but in terms of eyecatchers he stood out.

Added on 14 November 2023. finished fourth at Kempton under a very tender ride. He may prove to be a horse with issues but he is thrown in over hurdles on his Flat form and he certainly looked as if he could have finished closer with a more positive ride.

Added on 22 November 2023. Made a perfectly satisfactory return to action when winning a handicap at Cheltenham on Saturday 18 November. He has only been raised 6 to a mark of 143 and connections will be looking for a nice pot before dipping their toes back into Graded company.

Adden on 17 October 2023. Finished second at Ffos Las having travelled into the race strongly and is making up into a nice young stayer. Soft ground does seem to suit but it is more his profile since going up in trip that is the main angle.
