Richard Hoiles’ Horse Tracker: My horses to follow

Follow this article to stay up to date with which horses the racing commentator is keeping his eye on this season.

You can follow all the horses in Richard’s stable with the Racing TV Tracker.

Added on 25 January 2024. Was forced wide on the All Weather at Lingfield and never found the leaders coming back to him. His shrewd yard are adept at finding openings for this type of horse.

Added on 26 September 2023. Finished third at Sandown at a big price, and it’s always worth taking note when one of Alan King’s two-year-olds runs well on debut. If he makes the usual improvement, he should be capable of winning a small race next time.

Added on 3 October 2023. Caught the eye in no uncertain terms when finishing fifth in a maiden at Newmarket. She took a while to work out what was required but made really good progress through the final two furlongs and has a pedigree that cries out for her being even more effective over a longer trip.

Added on 1 February 2024. Looked the most interesting horse going forward in the first division of the Mares maiden hurdle. May not show her full potential until handicaps, but there no one knows the Mares programme book like Anthony Honeyball.

Added on 19 February 2024. Stayed on from the back at Ascot without ever really threatening, but is now below the mark of his last two wins, both of which were at Plumpton. The 4 March meeting features a £10k race over the distance of both those victories, which would look a very good target for Neil Mulholland’s charge.

Added on 14 December 2023. Shaped with lots of promise when finishing third on debut behind the very impressive Night Raider. The way she made steady late progress suggests the experience will not be lost on her and connections could well look to land a maiden and get a win against her name sooner rather than later given her potential value as a broodmare.

Added on 13 February 2024. Finished fourth in the Betfair Hurdle and looked as though there could be more to come if upped in trip. The handicapper left his mark unchanged, meaning he has now twice placed off 131 and now 132, a mark good enough to get into the Martin Pipe at the Festival last season.

Added on 22 November 2023. Was sent off favourite for her second career start at Lingfield but got no sort of run at a crucial stage. She ran well on debut at Goodwood, which I always think is a very tricky track for horses making their first career starts. She is bred to stay well and the 10f maidens are generally less competitive than their shorter counterparts.

Added on 29 November 2023. Caught everyone’s eye on his third run under an inexperienced rider at Lingfield. A mark of 70 may be harsh on the bare form, but there seemed to be any amount of potential improvement which William Haggas can exploit.

Added on 17 October 2023. Made late headway on his debut at Kempton. He looked raw in the paddock and going down but produced solid late progress in a race which favoured those close to the speed. Getting sucked into late headway horses can be risky, but this looked a bit different in terms of physical and mental development and he should go well next time.

Added on 10 October 2023. Stuck impressively to his task having been headed when finishing third at Salisbury last time. He may have been quite well placed as regards the overall tempo, but he really looked a big, strong horse who should definitely be open to improvement. He looks certain to stay at least 10f and win races.

Added on 13 February 2024. His mark was left unchanged after a narrow second to Highstakeplayer, which proved his stamina at 3m and, even at the age of 11, opens up new avenues. He would also be a player in the new 2m 4f Veterans series and looks competitive off 120.

Added on 10 January 2023. Came down on the turn on his hurdling debut at Aintree when still well in touch, and more than confirmed that promise when finishing third at Taunton, making progress from the rear and beaten less than three lengths. That looked solid form and a reproduction of it should see him go close in a novice hurdle.

Added on 7 February 2024. Came off second best in what looked an above average Mares bumper. She really travelled well but committed a bit prematurely. She will be clearly be good enough for a similar event if connections can resist a rise in class.

Added on 2 January 2024. Showed promise on debut at Exeter when ridden very much with an eye to the future. He came from a fair bit further back than the first two and was taken wide to get a good sight at his hurdles. Even average improvement should see him competitive in a novice hurdle next time.

Added on 19 February 2024. Shaped well for a long way at a big price at Ascot. Alistair Ralph’s horses are going well but the stable are only 7/100 (A/E 0.81) with switchers, and a big price suggested this was just a getting to know you exercise. It could well be different second up.

Added on 10 November 2023. Finished second to Colonel Harry in a three-runner novice chase at Chepstow. He jumped soundly and was not knocked about when headed. Hopefully he can reward the kindness with a victory or two in novice handicaps.

Added on 13 February 2024. Just lost out in a creditable effort at Plumpton by a narrow margin. He is really suited by deep ground so there should be options at a low level in the weeks ahead, especially if he can jump to the same high standard he did here.

Added on 14 December 2023. Looks to have finished with more to give on two of the three races she has contested under Rules. A breathing issue has been reported so if her handicap debut coincides with either a breathing operation or a step up in trip then she is likely to be seen to better effect. The current period of soft ground may also be in her favour.

Added on 14 November 2023. finished fourth at Kempton under a very tender ride. He may prove to be a horse with issues but he is thrown in over hurdles on his Flat form and he certainly looked as if he could have finished closer with a more positive ride.

Added on 10 January 2024. Made good progress out of the ruck and finished fourth at a big price at Taunton. While I am sometimes wary of a big-priced horse improving out of the blue, the fact she is a mare means a novice against her own sex will almost certainly be significantly weaker than this race.

Added on 25 January 2024. Got no room up the inner at Lingfield and eased as a result. It is still early days for her and she is reported to be a good work horse at home so she is worth keeping an eye on. Her grinding style is better suited to the other All Weather tracks.

Added on 25 January 2024. Won by a huge 12 lengths at Lingfield last June in a race that contained four next-time-out winners, and caught the eye again as a 66/1 chance at Wolverhampton.

Added on 7 February 2024. Ran too free and faded in a 2m novice hurdle in February. He moved to the front travelling really well but could not last home and eventually was a well beaten fourth. He stayed 1m 4f on the Flat and, if he can harness the enthusiasm more effectively, could well find a race on a sharp track on decent ground.
