Richard Hoiles: 5 Saturday selections from across the cards
Richard Hoiles Betway column NEW

The racing broadcasting is spreading the net far and wide this Easter weekend, with picks from Haydock, Musselburgh, Carlisle, Cork and Wolverhampton.

Spreading the net far and wide this week where, despite the fact we are now meant to be in spring, ground conditions continue to resemble mid-winter.

Musselburgh stages a decent Flat card where GLORIOUS ANGEL / looks the best bet in the Scottish Sprint Cup (Musselburgh, 15:00) which has attracted a smaller field than expected. Glorious Angel flew out of the stalls last weekend at Doncaster in the Listed Cammidge Trophy when a big-priced outsider. The strong headwind counted against front runners that day and this looks a far more realistic opportunity. Twice second last season on heavy ground off higher marks and, with Brandon Wilkie taking a useful 5lb off, she should be competitive. Fine Wine can give her a good trail in and she can end a frustratingly long losing streak.

ITV coverage will include jumping action from Haydock where RIDERS ONTHE STORM / looks well treated in the 2m 4f Veterans Series Final (Haydock, 15:15). A former Old Roan Chase winner, he lost his form afterwards which sees him line up on a 9lb lower mark than that victory. He looked to be coming back to form when second at Doncaster last time on his first run after a wind operation over a distance short of his best.

Away from the two main meetings, there look to be a few interesting runners starting with MR BRAMLEY / (Carlisle, 15:05) for Jedd O’Keeffe. He was successful on his hurdling debut on heavy ground with Panhandle Slim, who lines up again, back in third. Largy Poet looks the main danger but has to carry a double penalty and there was no depth to his Wincanton win last time. He takes a big share of the market, probably due to the Paul Nicholls factor.

Stable switchers to Paddy Twomey have proved a profitable angle with 14 of the 37 first starters for the yard being successful (with an actual/expected ratio of 1.68) and GO BIG OR GO HOME / (Cork, 13:15) was a particularly eye-catching one. A half-sister to Battaash, she cost a cool $1.8m as a yearling and showed something in two starts for Bryan Smart. The step up to 7f on deep ground is an interesting first step given her pedigree, but connections will be very keen to get a win out of her and Twomey could be the man to oblige.

In the evening, BATTLEOFBALTIMORE / (Wolverhampton, 18:00) can gain a first victory and continue the good start to the campaign for Dylan Cunha. His third at Chelmsford in December has been made to look much better than it may have seemed at the time, with second, fourth and twelfth all winning next time out. The drop back to 7f looks fine given he was in front at the furlong pole that day and the cheekpieces he wore for the first time that day are retained.

Haydock – Sean Bowen (15/63, A/E 1.46)

·         Four rides include the progressive Secret Trix / (14:40) on whom he has won three times.

·         Our regular Saturday night angle with six rides and is reunited with Savannah Smiles / in the finale (20:30) who he won on two starts ago.
