Newmarket July Festival Day 2 Tips

Newmarket's July Festival continues with day two on Friday and there is a fantastic seven-race card to get stuck into.

The girls get to take centre stage at Newmarket on Friday, as the two best races on the seven-race card are open to fillies and mares only.

The first of them is the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes and the impressive Albany winner is among the field.

Our main event on Day 2 is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, where Duke Of Cambridge victor Blue Bolt is in action, while there is also some excellent handicap action on offer.

Our expert has taken a closer look at the card and selected three strong fancies to follow across the afternoon.

Newmarket Day 2 Tips

13:50 Newmarket – Decade Of Time @ 11/2
14:25 Newmarket – Libertango @ 4/6
15:35 Newmarket – Precise @ 8/11

13:50 Newmarket – Decade Of Time @ 11/2

Jack Channon’s DECADE OF TIME is set to make his first start in handicap company in this Newmarket event and the thrice-raced colt has made a good impression so far. Third on debut at Newbury in April, he was an eyecatcher on that occasion and kept on well towards the finish.

The son of Study Of Man improved to get off the mark with a comfortable win at Windsor next time, at the expense of previous winner Heraldry, who is in opposition once again here. A penalty made no difference at Nottingham after that and he absolutely bolted up.

Channon’s three-year-old coped well with the soft ground to score by just over four lengths and the step up to 1m2f should be right up his street. Connections should be pretty happy with an opening mark of 92 and he could be one for higher grades in the near future.

14:25 Newmarket – Libertango @ 4/6

Trainer George Boughey’s stocks continue to rise and horses like LIBERTANGO will help that trend to continue. She won a seemingly ordinary race at Leicester on her debut in May and overcame a bit of a slow start to score by a comfortable margin in the end.

It’s worth noting that she did beat the boys on that occasion and the form has received a couple of boosts, with the third and fourth both winning next time. A trip to Royal Ascot then beckoned and she maintained her unbeaten record impressively in the Albany Stakes.

Aidan O’Brien’s Sun Goddess looked like the winner but she travelled smoothly into the race to win easily and the second went one better in a Group 2 at the Curragh shortly after. That form makes her the one to beat and a similar performance will lead to another victory.

15:35 Newmarket – Precise @ 8/11

The three-year-old fillies get to take on their elders in the Falmouth Stakes and the older filly and mare division doesn’t look too strong at the moment. Aidan O’Brien’s PRECISE has already won four Group 1 races and looks well to add another to her tally.

Progressing nicely towards the back end of last season, she landed the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Fillies’ Mile in September and October. She appeared to need the run in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and managed to reverse that form at the Curragh.

Things didn’t quite go to plan during the race in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out but she showed her class and grit to win anyway. O’Brien’s filly is clearly the best miler in her division and a 9lb age allowance will make her very hard to beat.
