Katie Walsh: My best bets for Day 1 at Cheltenham Festival 2025

The Betway ambassador runs through Tuesday's card and Cheltenham and picks out the horses she will have her eye on.

13:30 SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE

I absolutely love the Supreme and all that comes with it. The roar, the excitement and, of course, the best novice hurdlers going head-to-head.

Kopek Des Bordes is obviously the one to beat in the Cheltenham betting, but he’s a hot-headed horse and the excitement around him could have him beaten before he’s got to the start.

At the prices, he’s skinny enough, so I’d rather be looking for Romeo Coolio / or William Munny / to get placed. They’ve both got solid form.

14:00 ARKLE CHASE

Not much to say on the Arkle other than that if Majborough / jumps around, he wins.

14:40 ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE

The Irish have a poor record in the Ultima, while the English don’t, so I’d be looking for Ben Pauling’s Henry’s Friend / , who has been targeted for the race and has a touch of class.

At the very bottom, Myretown / has a low weight and a progressive profile, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s doing his best work late for a yard who know how to train staying chasers.

15:20 MARES’ HURDLE

Lossiemouth / running in the Mares’ is a shame for the Champion Hurdle, but Willie [Mullins] wants winners. Lossiemouth has her best chance in the Mares’ and should be tough to beat.

16:00 CHAMPION HURDLE

I’m a big fan of both Constitution Hill and Brighterdaysahead / . They’re two outstanding racehorses, but I’ve got a feeling the mare will win. She gets 7lb from Constitution Hill and if Jack [Kennedy] lets her run away down the hill, she could simply win by outstaying Nicky’s horse. It’ll be some race, either way.

16:40 FRED WINTER HANDICAP HURDLE

Ross runs Slurricane / , who must have a cracking chance at getting placed in the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. He’s come forward and beaten some of the main market protagonists, so he must be overpriced. We were second in the race last year, so it would be a dream to go one better this year.

One horse that finished behind Ross’s last time, Total Look / , was an eyecatcher and he shouldn’t be dismissed.

17:20 NATIONAL HUNT CHASE

The last race of the day is the National Hunt Chase and it’s often down to a real stayer. Transmission / has course form and has Patrick Mullins booked, so he won’t be far away.

Now Is The Hour / is the right favourite for Gavin Cromwell, who is going to have a belter of a week and should come away with plenty of winners.
