Cheltenham Gold Cup tips
There isn’t much to say in the Gold Cup other than if GALOPIN DES CHAMPS turns up in his usual form and gets around, I can’t see him getting beaten. He was magnificent at Leopardstown last time and even seems to be improving! It’ll take a good one to stop him. I hope for racing he does win his third Gold Cup.
Friday looks so competitive, but I like the fact they’ve supplemented INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN in the Gold Cup. He must have a very solid each-way chance. He was a huge eyecatcher in the Irish Gold Cup and it looked as if he was heading for the Grand National, which he might do, but it’d not the strongest Gold Cup and he could really be in the mix.
The Real Whacker should ensure no easy lead for Galopin Des Champs, and that the race is run to find out Banbridge’s stamina and allow Inothewayurthinkin, who won the Kim Muir here last year, to outstay him.
The lightly raced MONTY’S STAR is the other each-way candidate, having finished second in last year’s Brown Advisory to Fact To File. He did not reappear until New Year’s Day, where he looked rusty when beaten at Tramore and was another to find the steady pace behind Galopin Des Champs in the DRF against him.
The alternative bets for the Gold Cup
While Galopin Des Champs is the clear favourite for the race, but what about some alternative Cheltenham Gold Cup tips?
King George winner Banbridge is next in the betting, and the biggest question mark over Joseph O’Brien’s gelding is stamina. His victory last time out was his first attempt at three miles since running in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Aintree.
Galopin Des Champs is an absolute monster and Banbridge will need to have plenty of power if he can lay a glove on the favourite.
Fact To File will probably run in the Ryanair and wouldn’t be without a chance, but significant improvement will be required based on the evidence of his most recent performance.
Corbetts Cross represents Emmet Mullins and Patrick Mullins nominated this horse as the one he fears the most. Stamina won’t be an issue, but the jury’s out on whether or not he has enough class to stay in the race long enough to use that to his advantage.
L’Homme Presse was bitterly disappointing at Ascot recently but won the Cotswold Chase here before that. He’s probably the best of the British, but he looked like a non-stayer when failing to get up the hill last year.
Best Gold Cup each-way bet: Monty’s Star
Monty’s Star is available at a double-figure price and has a similar profile to Minella Indo, who won the Gold Cup for these connections back in 2021. Second to Fact To File in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham last year, he’s sure to be suited by the emphasis on stamina.
You would have hoped for a little better behind Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup last time out, but this test should be much more to his liking and realistically, they’re all playing for places behind the big favourite.
