Batten down the hatches

Batten down the hatches

We're forecasting a big storm over the Gloucestershire area...

Hurricane Fly is out to claim a magnificent hat-trick in the Champion Hurdle against what is admittedly a wide open field, but he’s got the legs to do just that. As Willie Mullins chases down a fourth Top Trainer in five years, his two big guns, Hurricane Fly and Quevega, will be big hopes towards getting his week off to the perfect start and there’s nothing to suggest he’ll be left disappointed. The doubters will point towards Fly’s advanced years, but having left Our Conor for dead at Leopardstown last time out, there just isn’t the evidence to support the claim that the 10 year old will picked off by of his more youthful challengers. Mullins himself has claimed that Hurricane Fly could be better this year, and if that holds true, it’s a worrying proposition for the chasing pack.

There has been much support for The New One in the weeks leading up to this race, seeing him backed into 5/2 favourite, but his jumping is a concern. Any slight lapse could be costly in this company. My Tent or Yours is another popular name in the frame, who certainly has the pace to mount a serious challenge but suffering a slight knock in preparation last week won’t have improved his chances here.

Keep an eye on Jezki, who despite some rocky recent form, will be guided by Barry Geraughty who holds an unblemished record atop this horse. He could prove a real threat if he gets it right on the day and has decent e/w appeal.

Winner: Hurricane Fly (3/1)
