Andrew Balding’s Newbury and York runners | 18 July 2020

The Betway ambassador gives the lowdown on all of his horses heading to Newbury and York, and reveals what is next for his 2000 Guineas winner.

It was announced earlier this week that our stable star, Kameko, will be heading to Goodwood for the Sussex Stakes in a couple of weeks’ time.

The key to the decision is the fact that he’s come out of the Derby very well and the race falls nicely in between where we are now and the International at York, which has always been in my mind for him.

You’d think a mile and quarter on a big, galloping track would really suit him. He thrived on his racing last year and I think he’ll thrive on it this year, too, so it’s all systems go for what looks like it could be a proper race.

Saturday runners

12:30 Newbury

Horn Of Plenty {ODDS:583878438:SP} has run well in her three starts this season and, while this is a much tougher race than we’d ideally hoped for, our options have been limited, so we’re more hopeful than confident.

She’ll keep progressing throughout the season, though.

13:05 Newbury

Calcutta Cup {ODDS:583878421:SP} missed the break on his debut when we pitched him into a hot Woodcote at Epsom, and from then on it was game over. The experience won’t be lost on him, though. He’ll be much sharper now and has the ability to go well.

We also introduce Rushmore {ODDS:583878453:SP}, who is having his first start in the race. He’s certainly got ability but, as I’ve said so many times with newcomers, you just never really know what you’ll get, as a first race is a lot different to work at home.

13:20 York

Sidereal {ODDS:583878822:SP} put his first run behind him and ran well on his second start at Windsor. If he runs to that sort of form again, then he’ll have a chance.

13:55 York

I think it’s fair to say that Ranch Hand {ODDS:583878793:8/1} ran a better race than the bare form suggests at Haydock last time. He just couldn’t quicken when they upped the tempo, so we felt going up in trip again would help him.

It’s a small but select field, so he’ll have to run to his best to be competitive.

14:30 York

Pivoine {ODDS:583878805:10/1} won the John Smith’s Cup last year and seems in great nick ahead of his bid to defend it.

I’d have to say that, ideally, we’d have gotten a run into him, as he’s always been better with one under his belt, but he got a small niggle before Ascot which put paid to that idea.

With that said, he’s well drawn and in very good form at home, so fingers crossed he gets some luck.

We also run Good Birthday {ODDS:583878850:14/1}, who is going to need plenty of good fortune as well as he’s drawn out in the car park!

He’s got talent, as he showed when finishing third in the Cambridgeshire last year, but, make no mistake, the draw hasn’t helped us here.

15:25 Newbury

We run two in the Aphrodite Stakes, one of which is Shailene {ODDS:583878485:7/1}, who is proven at this level.

She won a Listed race in Italy last year and is a course-and-distance winner, too. She loves fast ground and, with the weather forecast as it is – it will keep drying and get quicker – she has a nice chance on her best form.

Tribal Craft {ODDS:583878488:11/1} also runs in the race and I was impressed with her last time. I’ve always thought she’s got the ability to win a race of this nature, but she may just prefer a little give in the ground.

16:00 Newbury

Shine So Bright {ODDS:583878482:7/1} has a proper chance in the Hackwood Stakes if he comes back to his best form. He can mix it over six or seven furlongs and has some very useful form in the book from last year.

He wasn’t at the races at Royal Ascot, which just seems to have been one of those days, but he was much better at Epsom last time.

He was placed in the Mill Reef at two, so he acts around Newbury, and we’re looking forward to seeing him run.

17:00 Newbury

It was great to give Callum Hutchinson his first ride at Newbury aboard Isomer {ODDS:583878503:SP} recently. I thought he gave him a cracking ride and the pair team up again here.

He’s a lovely horse who, if he doesn’t bounce, looks sure to give his young rider another nice spin.
