The Grand National at Aintree is one of Britain’s most treasured sporting events, a thrilling contest that truly draws the nation together and is rightfully dubbed as the people’s race.
Racing aficionados and once-a-year punters alike are enthralled by the Aintree spectacle, as the famous spruce-topped fences, including The Chair, The Canal Turn and Foinavon, are jumped by the would-be Grand National heroes before one is left to round the elbow and pass the winning post for a place in history.
Ahead of the 2025 Grand National on Saturday 5 April at 16:00 we have all you need to know on the runners and weights for the race, and how you can get involved in the Grand National betting for 2025.
Grand National weights explained
The Grand National is a handicap, which means every runner is allotted a certain weight to carry in the race. These weights are based on their known ability from past performances and are assigned by the British Horseracing Authority’s senior handicapper.
In theory, the weights are designed to give every horse in the race an equal chance, as those of higher ability will carry more weight, attempting to level the playing field for those perceived to be inferior.
Of course, with four-miles-two-and-a-half furlongs to negotiate and 30 fences to jump in their two circuits of Aintree, the weights are just a starting point for the Grand National contenders.
They will need to show jumping ability, stamina, and determination, and probably enjoy an equal share of luck, to come past the winning post in first place.
