With one of golf's biggest events on the horizon, we take a closer look at which players are odds on favourites to make the team with captain Luke Donald's six remaining picks.
The build up to the Ryder Cup is now in full swing, with golf’s biggest event heating up even more as the captains make their decision on the final six picks.
The 2025 meeting between Europe and the USA will take place at the Bethpage State Park in New York from September 26th to 28th, with Europe hoping to retain the title they won convincingly two years ago.
Team USA captain Keegan Bradley has already announced his six picks, with superstar names such as Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa adding to an already strong team.
Beloved European captain Luke Donald is returning to the role that he took up in Rome at the 2023 Ryder Cup, but his picks are yet to be confirmed.
Many high-profile names missed out on automatic qualification to the European team, most notably the likes of Shane Lowry and Jon Rahm. So ahead of Donald’s full team announcement on Monday 1st August, we have delved into the Ryder Cup betting odds to see which players are most expected to get the call up.
Did Shane Lowry make the Ryder Cup team automatically?
Irishman Shane Lowry has been a captain’s pick in each of his two Ryder Cup appearances to date, but this time was sitting in the last automatic qualification spot until Rasmus Hojgaard claimed the final position after a strong finish at the British Masters.
Instead, Lowry must now rely on a captain’s pick again. However, after missing out on an automatic spot by only four points, and with proven Ryder Cup experience, he is highly likely to be one of Donald’s 12 players. The current odds for Lowry to be picked are 1/2.
Will Jon Rahm be picked for the Ryder Cup?
After a switch to rival tour LIV Golf back in late 2023, two-time major winner Jon Rahm has had mixed performances in the main PGA Tour events this season, thus leaving him way out of the top six positions in points required to automatically qualify.
The Spaniard ended the year 24th in points but is still a strong favourite to make the team with odds of 1/200.
Will Ludvig Aberg be a captain’s pick?
Ludvig Aberg finished ninth in Team Europe’s rankings after an inconsistent season, but the Swede’s form did begin to return in the final tournaments of the season as he looked to secure a spot on team Europe.
The odds for Aberg to be one of Luke Donald’s picks are 1/10, meaning it is highly expected he will be selected to compete in his second Ryder Cup – where he’ll hope to build on the two points from four matches on his debut.
Viktor Hovland’s chances of being picked
Fellow Scandinavian Viktor Hovland is also sitting at 1/10 in the odds for Donald’s picks after a somewhat shaky start to the season. With a win at the Valspar Championship earlier in the year, the popular Norwegian managed to get himself back in contention and is shaping up to be a guaranteed captain’s pick.
Hovland took the last Ryder Cup in Italy by storm, playing all five sessions and picking up 4.5 points – including a record-setting 9-and-7 win alongside Aberg in the foursomes.
Will Matt Fitzpatrick make the Ryder Cup team?
At the start of the season, making the Ryder Cup team looked like an impossible mission for Matt Fitzpatrick as he struggled to find consistency. Since the PGA Championship however, the Englishman started to turn things around and found himself finishing 11th in qualifying points.
The odds for Fitzpatrick being picked are 2/13, with Luke Donald potentially looking at his experience in three previous Ryder Cups as a factor. If picked however, Fitzpatrick will be aiming to improve on his event stats, which are currently sitting at only one point from eight matches.
What are the odds for Luke Donald’s player picks?
Jon Rahm 1/200
Ludvig Aberg 1/10
Viktor Hovland 1/10
Matt Fitzpatrick 2/13
Shane Lowry 1/2
Sepp Straka 8/11
Alex Noren 11/8
Matt Wallace 2/1
Jordan Smith 6/4
Marco Penge 2/1
Aaron Rai 7/2
Nicolai Højgaard 9/2
Niklas Norgaard 16/1
Thomas Detry 16/1
