Manchester United and Liverpool have produced some epic matches over the years and we have picked out 10 of the best.
It’s the biggest rivalry in English football, Manchester United and Liverpool have been battling it out since way back in 1894.
They have provided us with some of the greatest matches in living memory and In this article, we provide a run down of the top-10 meetings between the two North-West rivals.
10) August 22, 1953 – Liverpool 4-4 Man Utd
This eight-goal thriller at Anfield featured some legends from the 50s, as the two rivals shared the spoils.
Future Liverpool manager Bob Paisley played a wing-half for the hosts, while Scottish star Billy Liddell was one of Liverpool’s forwards that day.
United included Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor, both of which were part of the Busby Babes and lost their lives in the Munich air disaster five years later.
9) May 21, 1977 – Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool
The 96th FA Cup final was played out on a scorching hot day at Wembley, when all three goals were scored in the space of four second-half minutes.
Stuart Pearson fired United ahead, before two minutes later Jimmy Case’s turn and shot levelled matters for Liverpool.
What turned out to be the winner came on 55 minutes, when Lou Macari’s shot deflected in off team-mate Jimmy Greenhoff.
8) March 26, 1983 – Liverpool 2-1 Man Utd
In front of almost 100,000 fans, the two sides met in the final of the League Cup at Wembley, in what was Bob Paisley’s last major final as Liverpool manager.
Norman Whiteside scored an impressive individual goal to give United the lead, before a second-half angled drive from Alan Kennedy levelled matters.
The game went to extra-time and one of the best goals scored at the famous old stadium eventually saw Liverpool take the trophy, after a stunning curling effort from Ronnie Whelan.
7) 17 March, 2024 – Man Utd 4-3 Liverpool
Another FA Cup match appears next on the list, with this seven-goal battle going to extra-time at Old Trafford.
Scott McTominay poked the hosts in front, before Liverpool hit back with two goals just before the break from Alexis McAllister and Mo Salah.
Liverpool were again undone by a late United goal, this time it was Anthony with a turn and shot to send the game into extra-time.
Despite a long-range effort from Harvey Elliott to give the visitors the lead again, goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo snatched an unlikely win for Erik ten Hag’s hosts.
6) January 24, 1999 – Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool
Probably the most dramatic end to a Man Utd vs Liverpool game, this match was an FA Cup fourth-round tie that saw the hosts behind for 85 minutes, but eventually come out on top.
Michael Owen headed Liverpool in front after just three minutes and the Merseysiders looked like knocking their rivals out of the cup.
Dwight Yorke popped up with a close-range equaliser on 88 minutes, before ‘super-sub’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer grabbed the winner in stoppage time with a low left-foot shot.
5) March 5, 2023 – Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd
Sunday March 5 is a day etched in the memory of all Liverpool fans, with the Reds recording their biggest ever win over their major rivals.
It’s hard to believe but this game was 0-0 with just two minutes remaining of the first half, when Cody Gakpo cut in from the left and curled a shot into the far corner.
Liverpool doubled their lead two minutes into the second half, through Darwin Nunez’s close range header, and then the floodgates opened.
Gakpo grabbed his second, before a spectacular volley from Mo Salah made it 4-0 with still 24 minutes left to play. Further goals from Nunez and Salah followed, before Roberto Firmino put the seal on the win with just two minutes remaining,
4) April 4, 1988 – Liverpool 3-3 Man Utd
Another six-goal thriller but this time it was Liverpool at the top of the table, with the match swinging one way and then another.
Bryan Robson got United off to a quick start, scoring after just three minutes, before goals from Peter Beardsley and Gary Gillespie gave the hosts the lead at the break.
A 20-yard stunner from Steve McMahon moved Liverpool further in front at the start of the second half and it looked like Kenny Dalglish’s men would collect all three points.
Despite being down to 10-men though, Robson’s deflected strike reduced the deficit to 3-2 and United snatched a point with an equaliser from Gordon Strachan with 12 minutes remaining.
3) March 31, 1979 – Man Utd 2-2 Liverpool
This is commonly described as a classic FA Cup semi-final, with the two rivals facing off at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground.
Wearing an all-yellow kit, Liverpool took the lead with a brilliant individual goal from Kenny Dalglish, before Joe Jordan equalised with a downward header.
After Liverpool missed a penalty it was United, in their white and black away kit, who took the lead through Brian Greenhoff in the second half.
A young Alan Hansen snatched an equaliser in the last seven minutes, volleying in from close range after a save from Gary Bailey.
2) October 1, 1995 – Man Utd 2-2 Liverpool
This game will also be remembered as the match that saw Eric Cantona return for United, following the Frenchman’s eight-month ban.
For much of this game, Cantona was outshone by Liverpool’s Robbie Fowler, who scored two goals to put the visitors in front following Nicky Butt’s early goal.
But a foul by Jamie Redknapp on Ryan Giggs enabled Cantona to step up from the spot and beat David James to level the scores.
1) January 4, 1994 – Liverpool 3-3 Man Utd
A six-goal thriller that will always live in the memory of any fan that was lucky to see the Premier League clash on that Tuesday evening.
With the visitors opening up a gap at the top, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were 3-0 up within just 24 minutes, thanks to goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Dennis Irwin.
Liverpool fought back and after two goals from Nigel Clough, were 3-2 behind at half-time, with Neil Ruddock powering home a header with 11 minutes remaining.
