Premier League Team of the Week: Gameweek 31
Premier League Team of the Week

Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-0 to claim the EFL Trophy on Sunday but there were also eight Premier League games on matchday 31 and here is our pick of the players.

While Manchester City and Arsenal battled it out in the EFL Cup final at Wembley, the rest of the Premier League were jostling for positions in Gameweek 31.

Aston Villa picked up an important 2-0 win over a West Ham United side battling to avoid the drop.

Nottingham Forest were the worthy victors in a relegation six-pointer in north London, as they condemned Tottenham Hotspur to a 3-0 defeat.

Here is our team of the week for Gameweek 31.

Goalkeeper – Jordan Pickford (Everton)

A key figure in Everton’s impressive 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium, England shotstopper Jordan Pickford produced an excellent performance.

Denying Enzo Fernandez with one of the saves of the weekend, Pickford responded well to his costly mistake against Arsenal the previous week.

Defender – Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest)

On a day to remember for Forest fans as they earned a big win over Spurs, Nico Williams was in inspired form when it mattered.

Two assists on the day, including a beautiful in-swinging cross for Forest’s third, Williams was outstanding for the Tricky Trees in the capital.

Defender – Nikola Milenkovic (Nottingham Forest)

Able to nullify the Tottenham attack, Nikola Milenkovic was another Forest defender who delivered on Sunday.

The Serbian produced 11 clearances over the course of the game and won five of his six aerial duels to help Forest keep an important clean sheet on the road.

Defender – James Tarkowski (Everton)

Neutralising the threat of Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, Everton centre-back James Tarkowski showed his wealth of experience on Saturday.

Producing an important block from a Pedro shot during the game, Tarkowski showed what his team missed in his absence against Arsenal.

Defender – Timothy Castagne (Fulham)

Creating three chances from right-back for Fulham in their 3-1 home victory over Burnley on Saturday, Timothy Castagne did well to fill the void left by the absent Kenny Tete.

Also winning five of his six defensive duels over the course of the game, Castagne gave very little away down his side of the field against the Clarets at Craven Cottage.

Midfielder – James Garner (Everton)

Showing exactly why he was recently called up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, James Garner excelled in Everton’s win over Chelsea on Merseyside.

Providing an assist for the crucial opening goal of the game with a lovely threaded ball through the Chelsea defence, Garner is more than deserving of his place in this latest Team of the Week.

Midfielder – John McGinn (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa were the big winners in the battle for the Champions League places after their victory over the Hammers at Villa Park.

Once again, the opening goal was crucial in that game and it was John McGinn with a gorgeous curling effort from the edge of the box to break the deadlock.

Almost passing the ball into the goal, the Scotland international showed just how dangerous and composed he can be in the final third after also scoring against Lille in midweek.

Midfielder – Harry Wilson (Fulham)

Such a key figure for Fulham, Wales international Harry Wilson was once again in inspired form for the Cottagers at the weekend.

Scoring his 10th league goal of the campaign in the 73rd minute to help Fulham take the lead for the first time in the game, Wilson was instrumental in securing three points against Burnley.

Midfielder – Josh King (Fulham)

Another player to impress for Marco Silva’s Fulham, King bagged his first Premier League goal on Saturday against relegation-threatened Burnley.

Scoring the equaliser after the opening goal from Zian Flemming, King took his opportunity. which inspired the Fulham comeback in the capital.

Striker – Beto (Everton)

A brace of goals and an assist in the win over Chelsea, Beto secures one of the two striker positions in this Team of the Week.

Latching onto a Garner pass for the opener, Beto smashed in a second through the legs of keeper Robert Sanchez to put Everton 2-0 up in the 62nd minute to all but secure the victory for David Moyes’ men.

Striker – Danny Welbeck (Brighton)

Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck will have enjoyed his two goals against Liverpool on Saturday.

Finding the back of the net either side of the half-time whistle, the 35-year-old showed he is still more than a threat in the Premier League despite his advancing years.
