When does the 2023/24 Premier League season start?

The Premier League season starts on Friday 11 August 2023, with last year’s champions Manchester City travelling to Burnley, who were promoted last season after winning the Championship.

It will also be the first time ex-Manchester City captain and Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has faced his old club in a league game.

When does the 2023/24 Premier League season end?

The final round of Premier League fixtures will be on Sunday 19 May 2024, with all 10 matches kicking off at the same time.

How many games are played during the Premier League season?

Every Premier League team will play each team twice, once at home and once away, working out at a total of 38 matches each.

How many teams are in the Premier League?

There are 20 teams in the Premier League.

How does the Premier League fixture schedule work?

There are 38 matchdays, generally with at least one per week aside from breaks for cup competitions and international breaks.

There will be four international breaks during the season: 4-12 September, 9-17 October, 13-21 November and 18-26 March.

The first and last weekends in January will also be reserved for the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup.

There will also be a winter break of sorts in the 2023/24 Premier League season, lasting from 13-30 January. Within that 17-day period, there will be one Premier League matchday split across two weekends, with five games apiece. This is to ensure that all teams receive a two-week break.

How are teams promoted to and relegated from the Premier League?

Three teams are promoted from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of each season.

The Championship is England’s second tier. The top two teams in the Championship will be automatically promoted to the Premier League at the end of each season, while the third promotion spot goes to the winner of the play-offs.

The Championship play-offs are contested between the teams that finish between third and sixth, with third facing sixth and fourth facing fifth in a two-legged semi-final. The semi-final winners then face one another in the play-off final at Wembley, the winner of which is promoted to the Premier League.

Three teams are also relegated from the Premier League each year. These are always the three teams that finish in the bottom three positions in the league.

Who got promoted to and relegated from the Premier League in 2023/24?

In the 2022/23 season, Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town were all promoted from the Championship to the Premier League, the latter for the first time in their history.

Southampton, Leicester and Leeds, meanwhile, were all relegated to the Championship.

How many teams can qualify for European places in the 2023/24 Premier League?

In England, there are currently seven European qualification spots up for grabs each season. These include four Champions League places, two Europa League and one Europa Conference League place.

In the 2023/24 season, however, there will be eight English teams in Europe given that West Ham won the 2022/23 Europa Conference League, meaning they qualified for the Europa League regardless of their league position.

The four Champions League spots are given to the teams that finish between first and fourth in the Premier League.

The team that finishes fifth will qualify for the Europa League, while the second spot is reserved for the winner of the FA Cup. Should the FA Cup winner finish in the top five of the Premier League, the second Europa League place is given to the sixth-placed team.

England’s Europa Conference League place is reserved for the winner of the EFL Cup although, like with the FA Cup, it will be given to the highest-placed Premier League finisher that has not qualified for Europe if the winner is in a European place.

Where can I watch the Premier League games on TV?

The Premier League’s TV rights deals are collectively worth more than £5bn. This allows the division to be shown across the globe.

In England, the rights for the 2023/24 season are held by Sky Sports and TNT, which was formerly known as BT Sport.
