Football tips: Best bets for England v Greece

Adrian Humphries' selections for England's third Nations League match include under 2.5 goals with Ollie Watkins to find the net.

England picked up two comfortable victories in their opening two matches under caretaker manager Lee Carsley, getting the better of Ireland and Finland respectively.

They next face a tougher challenge as they host Greece at Wembley on Thursday, with the visitors also having won both of their matches over Finland and Ireland in the previous international break.

Best bets

Under 2.5 goals @ Evs

Ollie Watkins to score at any time @ 11/10

Declan Rice to have a shot on target @ 7/5

Cagey affair overpriced

Lee Carsley promised a more attacking style of football under his management than England had played under Gareth Southgate, but the Three Lions are yet to blow a team away under the new boss.

The nature of Nations League football means that teams can often rotate and England will not be looking to overexert themselves in these matches.

Seven of the Three Lions’ last ten games have each yielded no more than two goals and a similar result may be overpriced on this occasion.

Ivan Jovanovic’s visitors have won their last three games without conceding and Germany needed a last-minute winner to get past Greece earlier in the year.

The Greeks were beaten only 1-0 by the Netherlands in Euro 2024 qualifying and may be able to keep things relatively tight against an England team they are likely to sit deep against.

Carsley is expected to rotate for this game, particularly given the injury issues that have befallen the squad, and there can sometimes be a disjointed feel to these mid-season internationals.

England may well win by a similar scoreline to that of their two Nations League games last month, which both ended 2-0, so going with under 2.5 goals on Thursday may be prudent.

Watkins to prove able replacement

Harry Kane shook off an injury issue to lead the line for Bayern Munich against Aston Villa last week, but England’s record goalscorer may well be rested for this clash.

Ollie Watkins, who lined up for the Villans last midweek, could be his replacement on Thursday and the striker is fancied to play a starring role for England.

Watkins scored 19 Premier League goals for Villa last season and he already has four in seven matches this term.

He scored the crucial goal to send England into the Euro 2024 final and could add to his national team tally on this occasion.

Rice could have a go

Declan Rice scored for England against Ireland in the last international break and he could get plenty of space in midfield to take a pop at goal given that Greece are likely to sit deep against their hosts.

Rice is also a threat from set-pieces so is taken to record a shot on target on Thursday.
