We analyse the most popular bets in the Championship for the upcoming season, including who will win the title, finish in the top six and be relegated.
Birmingham City are the most popular bet to win the Championship this season, with 25 per cent of the bets in the Championship Winner market at Betway being placed on the Blues.
After an excellent season in League One in which they set a new record for the highest ever points tally in the EFL, Birmingham are fancied for back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League.
Chris Davies’ side are currently priced at 15/8 to go up in the Championship promotion betting.
The second-most popular Championship winner bet is Coventry City, who have received 14 per cent of bets in the title winner market. The Sky Blues finished fifth in the table last year and were beaten by Sunderland in the play-offs.
With 12 per cent of Championship winner bets, Ipswich Town are the third-most popular team with Betway customers. Kieran McKenna’s side were relegated from the Premier League last season but are fancied to go straight back up.
Another popular Championship betting market is the top six, and Derby County are the side who have attracted the most bets, with 17 per cent. Coventry are again popular in this market, with 14 per cent of bets, which is level with QPR for second place.
At the other end of the table, Hull City are the most-backed team to be relegated from the Championship this season. Hull narrowly avoided the drop last season, finishing 21st and level on points with relegated Luton, but stayed up thanks to their superior goal difference. They have received 36 per cent of Championship relegation bets.
Next on the list comes Sheffield Wednesday, who have received 21 per cent of bets to go down. The club are in a financial crisis with the season around the corner and have been put under a transfer embargo for failing to pay their players.
The third-most backed team to be relegated is Preston North End, who finished one point above the drop in 20th last season. Preston have received 15 per cent of Championship relegation bets ahead of the new season.
