England on the up
England bounced back in Cape Town to level the series at 1-1 with the help of star performances from Dominic Sibley and Ben Stokes.
A rare away win on a tense final day felt like a turning point for Joe Root’s side, who now head to Port Elizabeth with some serious momentum.
South Africa lost their last Test on this ground – an eight-wicket defeat by a poor Sri Lanka side in February 2019 – and seem to have already lost their new-management bounce.

Denly = Mr. Reliable
Sibley was the focus at Newlands after a wonderful maiden Test century, but Joe Denly’s consistency has been key for England in recent matches.
The 33-year-old is now fully established at No. 3 after a tough start to his international career, with his last 10 Test innings reading: 53, 14, 94, 74, 35, 4, 50, 31, 38 and 31.
It is surely only a matter of time before he begins to turn those starts into big innings.

Broad the main man
England’s two elder statesmen were reunited for the first two Tests of this series, but Jimmy Anderson’s fractured rib means that Stuart Broad will spearhead the attack in the third Test.
The loss of Anderson is a blow for England, particularly after his seven-wicket display in Cape Town, though Broad tends to relish the responsibility of being the sole senior bowler.
His average when leading the attack drops to 25 – compared to 29 when he bowls in tandem with Anderson – so expect him to come to the fore in Port Elizabeth.

Faf under pressure
Faf du Plessis’ latest failure – he scored just 20 runs across two innings in Cape Town – means it is now more than a year since the South Africa skipper scored a Test-match century.
He has passed 50 just once in his last eight Test innings, which read: 64, 5, 1, 4, 29, 20, 1 and 19.
There’s no doubt that he is the right man to lead this Proteas side, but his shortcomings as a batsman in recent matches mean he is under significant pressure to justify his place.

Nortje the danger
Anrich Nortje has impressed for South Africa so far, claiming five wickets at both Centurion and Cape Town.
Port Elizabeth is expected to be the slowest surface encountered in the series, so the 26-year-old’s extra yard of pace should ensure that he remains the Proteas’ biggest threat.
St. George’s Park is Nortje’s home ground with Eastern Province, and his familiarity with the surface will further boost his chances come Thursday.
