India v England cricket tips: Best bets for the 5th Test

Adrian Mills provides his best bets for the final instalment of the five-Test series in Dharamsala.

India sealed a series victory over England in Ranchi, taking a 3-1 lead in the five-match series, but the final Test in Dharamsala should still be an intriguing contest.

England won the first Test in spectacular fashion and they will be aiming to finish their tour on a high after three successive defeats.

Ben Stokes’ men let slip a strong position in the fourth Test and they are 12/5 for victory in the foothills of the Himalayas while India are 4/7 to complete a 4-1 series win.

Bumrah back to torment England’s batters

India’s spinners did the damage in the fourth Test in Ranchi as Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav shared nine wickets to roll England over for just 145 in their second innings.

The bad news for England’s batters is that Jasprit Bumrah, rested last time out, is back in the squad in Dharamsala and he merits a bet to be named player of the match.

Chilly, cloudy conditions are forecast for the final Test, meaning there may be more assistance for the quicker bowlers, and Bumrah was outstanding in the first three matches.

He claimed 17 wickets at an average of just 13.64 and he was player of the match in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, where he recorded figures of 6-45 and 3-46.

Bumrah’s previous Test series was equally impressive as he picked up 4-69, 2-25 and 6-61 in two matches in South Africa just after Christmas and he poses a major threat to England.

Gill can finish slow-burning series in style

With Virat Kohli and KL Rahul still unavailable, there is plenty of responsibility on India’s number three Shubman Gill and he is a tempting price to top-score in the first innings.

Gill had a slow start to the series, making 23, nought and 34 in his first three knocks, but he hit form during a vital century in the second innings in Vizag.

His 104 out of 255 set up a 106-run victory for India and he looked set for another century in the second innings in Rajkot before being run out for 91.

Gill has a wonderful IPL record for Gujarat Titans, but his unbeaten 52 in India’s nervy run-chase in Ranchi was a proper Test innings, albeit capped with a couple of sixes off spinner Shoaib Bashir.

That matchwinning knock will have boosted Gill’s confidence and he can lead the way for India in the first innings of the final Test.

England star set to shine on landmark appearance

While India’s batting unit is relatively inexperienced at Test level, England’s middle-order is set to contain three players with 100 or more caps.

Joe Root and captain Stokes will be joined in the 100 club by Jonny Bairstow, who can celebrate the landmark by scoring 23 or more runs in the first innings.

Bairstow has had a frustrating series, being dismissed between 25 and 38 in five of his eight innings, but he batted well for 38 and 30 in the fourth Test.

He played a starring role at the start of the Bazball era, scoring six centuries in ten Test matches in 2022, and he will be desperate to reward the selectors’ faith in his 100th appearance.
