England v India cricket tips: Best bets for the third Test

Jamie Griffith's tips for the third test of the series in Rajkot include a win for the visitors with Jimmy Anderson shining once again.

With the series hanging in the balance at 1-1, India and England reconvene in Rajkot on Thursday for what should be a gripping third Test.

England ran out surprise 28-run winners in the opening Test of the series before India hit back in Visakhapatnam, winning by 106 runs to level the scores.

It is all to play for heading into the third match at the Saurashtra Cricket Stadium and there are some great bets to be had.

England should sniff an opportunity in Rajkot

India have not lost a Test series on their own patch in 12 years but they have looked vulnerable in their tussle with England this year.

Brendon McCullum’s side showcased the best of ‘Bazball’ to win the opening Test and they were not exactly poor in the second either, having learned to cope with India’s spin attack and scoring runs throughout the order.

And heading into the third Test optimism should be high in the England camp, especially as India will not be at full strength.

Ravindra Jadeja is about to return but India will be without Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, who are unavailable, while Shreyas Iyer has been dropped due to a poor run of form.

That means a new-look India batting lineup will take to the crease in Rajkot with Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Paddikkal among those pushing for places.

England should therefore sniff blood and, given how well they have handled India’s spinners so far – Ravi Ashwin’s series economy rate is 4.08 – they represent value to win the Test match.

Anderson can make the most of conditions

In the second Test of the series, it was the pacemen who rose to the occasion with the ball as opposed to the spinners on show and it could be the same again in Rajkot.

A green pitch is expected for the third Test and Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain, has suggested England may therefore go for two seamers.

That means that one of either Mark Wood or Ollie Robinson could come into the fold to partner James Anderson.

But it is Anderson who remains England’s most dangerous bowling weapon, having taken five wickets in the second Test of the series.

The Rajkot pitch should not offer a lot of turn to spinners and Anderson should make the most of it.

Expect him to add to his tally of 39 wickets in India and be England’s top wicket-taker in the first innings.

Jaiswal looks like India’s best source of runs

The absence of Kohli and Rahul mean other players need to step up to the plate for India and one player who has impressed in this series with England is Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jaiswal, who is still only 22, made his Test debut in July last year and has already established himself as a key component of the India team.

He has scored 637 runs at an average of 57.90 in his six Tests so far and the highlight of that run came in the second Test against England.

In Visakhapatnam, Jaiswal took the initiative in India’s first innings with a score of 209, meaning he has made at least 50 in the first innings of four of the six Tests he has played.

Expect him to top score for the hosts once again.
