Our new research reveals the cities with the strongest foundations to become America’s future music powerhouses.
America is home to some of the biggest music cities in the world, from New York and Los Angeles to Nashville and Austin.
But beyond the established names, a new generation of cities is building the infrastructure, audiences and grassroots scenes needed to become the next big destinations for musicians.
New research from our online slots team has ranked America’s future music powerhouses by analysing their concert venues, open mic nights, recording studios and online search demand for gigs.
And Pittsburgh takes the top spot with a final score of 98.84, narrowly beating Cleveland in second place with 98.50.
The Steel City stands out for its combination of a strong live music scene and extensive recording infrastructure, with 32 concert venues and 40 recording studios recorded across the city.

Pittsburgh leads America’s next generation of music cities
Pittsburgh claims the top spot with a final score of 98.84, giving it a narrow advantage over fellow Rust Belt city Cleveland.
The city’s biggest strength is its recording infrastructure, with 40 studios, the highest total among all ten cities analysed. Pittsburgh also has 32 concert venues and more than 21,000 searches for gigs, suggesting the city combines opportunities for musicians to create music with a sizeable appetite for live performances.
Cleveland comes extremely close behind, scoring 98.50. The Ohio city has 38 recording studios and 28 concert venues, while its 20,880 gig-related searches put it just behind Pittsburgh for audience demand.
St. Louis takes third place with a final score of 93.59, helped by having the highest number of open mic nights in the study. The city has 16 open mic nights, giving emerging musicians plenty of opportunities to perform and build an audience.
It also has 41 concert venues, the highest venue total of any city in the top ten, although its 25 recording studios are some way behind Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
Cincinnati completes the top four with a score of 84.58. The city has 18 open mic nights, more than any other city in the ranking apart from St. Louis, alongside 31 recording studios and 27 concert venues.
Baltimore ranks fifth overall with a final score of 81.21. The Maryland city presents an interesting contrast to the rest of the ranking. It has 34 recording studios and 35 concert venues, as well as more than 20,000 searches for gigs, but just three open mic nights.
That makes Baltimore one of the strongest cities in the ranking for recording and established live venues, despite having a comparatively small grassroots open mic scene.
Columbus ranks sixth overall with a final score of 77.15, but the Ohio city records the highest search.
Calgary named Canada’s leading future music city
The research also looked north of the border to identify Canada’s emerging music cities.
Calgary takes the top spot with a final score of 95.56, comfortably ahead of Winnipeg in second place on 62.39.
The Alberta city performs strongly across the board, with 35 concert venues, 12 open mic nights and 24 recording studios.
It also records the highest search demand for gigs and music lessons among the Canadian cities studied, with 19,050 searches for gigs and a further 1,500 searches for music lessons.

Winnipeg takes second place with a score of 62.39, supported by 28 recording studios and 17,700 searches for gigs.
However, its 16 concert venues and eight open mic nights leave it some way behind Calgary across the overall index.
Halifax ranks third with 47.55, followed by London on 32.34. Both cities have smaller venue and recording infrastructures than Calgary, while also recording lower search demand for gigs.
Methodology
The future music cities were identified by analysing the number of concert venues, open mic nights and recording studios in each city, alongside online search demand for gigs.
Data on concert venues, open mic nights and recording studios was sourced from Yelp.
Search demand was measured using search volume data for relevant gig and music-related terms.
Each metric was weighted and combined to produce a normalised final score out of 100, with cities then ranked from highest to lowest.
