CFL Picks: Can Anyone Slow Down the Alouettes as Week 12 Kicks Off?

Four divisional games highlight Week 12, with B.C.’s surge, Zach Collaros’ protection and Tre Ford’s momentum shaping the betting slate

The CFL heads into Week 12, with four games on the schedule.

The question for tonight’s Ottawa Redblacks game in Montreal: Can anyone slow down the 8-1 Alouettes? Likely not the 0-9 Redblacks.

In CFL betting at Betway, the Alouettes are -834, the Redblacks +550, with the spread Montreal -13.5 (-110) and Ottawa +13.5 (-110). The total is 61.5 (Over is -105, Under is -115).

Bettors are asking themselves – can Ottawa stay within that number? It’s not a question of selecting who wins.

Montreal has scored at least 30 points in six straight games, while Ottawa has allowed a league-worst 322 points.

But do you see a two-touchdown Montreal victory? Ottawa quarterback Jake Maier has thrown for over 300 yards in four consecutive games, so the Redblacks can move the ball.

But for those thinking about laying the points – Montreal beat up Ottawa 34-13 in Week 9, and will be missing Cleyon Laing, Charlie Parks, Daniel Okpoko, Micheal Brodrique and Muftah Ageli on their defensive line, all out with injuries, leaving them extremely thin against a powerful Montreal offence.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. EST tonight.

Tomorrow, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-4) face the Edmonton Elks (7-3) at 9:30 p.m. EST, with quarterback Zach Collaros back for the Bombers, but his durability remaining a concern after he was sacked four times last week in their 33-21 win over Ottawa.

Pass protection is a major betting consideration in this game.

At Betway, the Elks are -250, the Bombers are +200, while the spread has Edmonton -4.5 (-115) and Winnipeg +4.5 (-105). The total is 59.5 (Over -105, Under -115).

The Elks defeated Winnipeg in Week 4, 23-18, forcing five Bombers fumbles that day (recovering three). Can a healthier team with Collaros keep the divisional matchup close?

Saturday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-6) are at BMO Field in Toronto to play the Argonauts (4-5), with big-time East Division implications. Game time is 7 p.m. EST.

The Ticats, led by QB Tre Ford, scored a big upset last weekend, 26-19 over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ford went 13-for-17 that game, for 151 yards and a touchdown.

The Argos got blown out by Edmonton, 42-12, and have a slew of injuries. This one makes for an interesting bet, if you think Ford can carry last week’s momentum into this start.

At Betway, the Argos are -200 moneyline favourites, with the Ticats at +175. Toronto is a 4.5-point favourite (-105), while Hamilton is +4.5 (-115). The total is set at 59.5 points, with the Over at -115 and the Under at -105.

On Sunday, the Roughriders (6-3) travel to B.C. to play the upstart Lions (4-5) at 7 p.m. EST. At Betway, the Lions are moneyline favourites at -135, with the Riders at +115. B.C. is a -1.5-point favourite (-115), with the Riders +1.5 (-105). The total is set at 61.5 points, with the Over at -115 and the Under at -105.

B.C. is riding a three-game winning streak since QB Nathan Rourke returned from a shoulder injury.  Last week in the win over Calgary, he had two touchdown passes and ran for another. Is B.C. for real, or does Saskatchewan, hardly a dog as a team, present value as a rare underdog?
