Which WNBA team has the most championships to its name? Our guide will run through all the teams that have won the WNBA Finals, in order of their title numbers.
Each year, every team in the WNBA is competing for the chance to win the most prestigious prize in women’s basketball: the WNBA Championship trophy. Only the best team can claim victory in the WNBA Finals, but which of them has won the trophy the most times?
We’ve listed the franchises with the most WNBA titles, so read on to find out which teams have had the most success – and learn when your favourite franchise won their trophies.
Who has won the most WNBA Championships?
As of 2025, three teams are tied with the most WNBA Championships to their names: the Houston Comets, the Minnesota Lynx, and the Seattle Storm. Each of these teams has earned four titles since forming, but with the Houston Comets disbanding in 2008, only the Storm and the Lynx remain active in the WNBA.
Which teams have won the WNBA?
The teams that make it through the WNBA playoffs and win their respective conference finals eventually reach the WNBA Finals. Then, the winner of that game earns the Championship title for the year. These are the teams that have won the WNBA Finals, in order of most victories to fewest:
4 titles, Houston Comets
The Houston Comets were one of the first major success stories in the WNBA, winning all four of their WNBA Championship titles in consecutive years from 1997 to 2000. This run of dominance cemented them among the best women’s basketball teams in the world at the time; but, unfortunately, the franchise would later dissolve in 2008.
4 titles, Minnesota Lynx
The Minnesota Lynx have reached seven separate WNBA Finals, winning the Championship on four occasions. Their first win came in 2011, after selecting Maya Moore as the first overall pick in the WNBA draft[MB1] . This was swiftly followed by success in 2013, 2015, and 2017. The Lynx have also suffered three losses at the last hurdle, making them the team with the most Finals appearances in WNBA history (seven).

4 titles, Seattle Storm
The most recent franchise to achieve a fourth WNBA title was the Seattle Storm. Following wins in 2004, 2010, and 2018, the Storm matched the Lynx and Comets’ records in 2020 with a 3-0 win over the Las Vegas Aces. The team also has a perfect win record in the WNBA Finals, making them the only active franchise in the league to have never lost the biggest game of the postseason.
3 titles, Los Angeles Sparks
With three WNBA Championships under their belt, the Los Angeles Sparks are tied as the team with the second-most titles in the league’s history. Their first two wins came back-to-back in 2001 and 2002, but fans would have to wait until 2016 to see the Sparks lift a third trophy – beating the Minnesota Lynx on this occasion. They have also made two losing Finals appearances – in 2003 and 2017.
3 titles, Phoenix Mercury
Like the Los Angeles Sparks, the Phoenix Mercury are also three for five in WNBA Finals. Their wins came in 2007, 2009, and 2014, but they also finished as runners-up in 1998 and 2021. All three of their title wins were assisted by our best WNBA player of all time, Diana Taurasi.
3 titles, Detroit Shock
In 2009, the Detroit Shock rebranded to become the Tulsa Shock, and later the Dallas Wings in the mid-2010s. Since changing names, the team hasn’t made it to the WNBA Finals; however, they were able to bring three Championships back home to Detroit in the 2000s, having won in 2003, 2006, and 2008. The Shock also lost one WNBA Finals in 2007, giving the Phoenix Mercury their first win.
2 titles, Las Vegas Aces
The Las Vegas Aces made their first appearance at the WNBA Finals in 2008, losing to the Detroit Shock. They subsequently lost their second Finals appearance in 2020, but have had better luck since – winning back-to-back Championships in 2022 and 2023.
1 title, New York Liberty
Fans of the New York Liberty had to wait 27 years to see their team lift a trophy, as the reigning WNBA Champions won their first in 2024 – after falling short on five separate occasions. Three of these Finals losses came in the first four seasons of the WNBA, as the Liberty were beaten by the Comets in 1997, 1999, and 2000.
1 title, Indiana Fever
After finishing the regular season as the Eastern Conference’s #2 seed in 2012, the Indiana Fever were able to take down the Minnesota Lynx 2-1 in the WNBA Finals, earning their first-ever league championship as a franchise. The team was less successful when appearing in the 2009 and 2015 Finals, however.
1 title, Sacramento Monarchs
Much like the Houston Comets, the Sacramento Monarchs were once a force to be reckoned with in the WNBA before disbanding in the late 2010s. The franchise won its first and only championship in 2005, and would reach the Finals in a losing effort the following year. However, they dissolved in 2009, making them one of only two inactive teams with WNBA championship victories.
1 title, Washington Mystics
The first Finals appearance for the Washington Mystics resulted in a loss, as they were beaten comfortably by the Seattle Storm in 2018. The following year, they would claim their first WNBA championship in a 3-2 victory over the Connecticut Sun (who, incidentally, have the most Finals appearances without winning a title – four).
1 title, Chicago Sky
For seven years, the Chicago Sky’s only Finals appearance was a 3-0 blowout loss against the Phoenix Mercury in 2014. This changed in 2021 when they got their revenge on the Mercury, beating them 3-1 to win a first WNBA championship in the franchise’s history. Finishing the season as the #6 seed, the Sky are the lowest-seeded team to win the Finals in the current WNBA playoff format[MB1] .

Who has never won the WNBA?
New York Liberty’s recent triumph in 2024 reduced the list of current teams to have never won a WNBA championship by one, with the party now occupied by just a handful of unfortunate franchises:
Atlanta Dream are yet to taste success, despite reaching three Finals and making nine Playoff appearances.
Connecticut Sun have featured in four Finals, including recent editions in 2019 and 2022, but triumph has so far eluded them.
Though they won multiple titles under the name Detroit Shock, the Dallas Wings are yet to earn a championship under their current moniker.
