Thursday international football tips: Best bets for Nations League matches

It feels like the World Cup only just ended, but international football is already back as the Nations League rolls around again.

Netherlands take on Germany in what is the headline match on Thursday evening, while Republic Of Ireland go to Kosovo and Portugal host Wales.

Republic Of Ireland have improved in recent times under Heimir Hallgrimsson and are worth getting on side against Kosovo.

Ireland haven’t been beaten in 90 minutes in any of their last eight matches, only losing to Czechia on penalties in the World Cup qualification play-offs, and even beat Portugal in November.

That sense of optimism can help them away to Kosovo, who have a decent home record.

Netherlands v Germany tips

It’s very difficult to look anywhere but at goals for a game that should be close but screams entertainment.

Two new bosses go head to head here, and neither Xavi nor Jurgen Klopp will want their teams to take a backward step.

The recent history of this fixture also suggests this will be high-scoring, with BTTS & over 2.5 goals landing in five of the last seven matches between the sides.

Portugal v Wales

It feels like things are delicately poised for Craig Bellamy’s tenure as Wales boss after an encouraging start fizzled out with their last few results.

Bellamy’s side are winless in five since a 1-0 victory in Liechtenstein last November and failed to beat Bosnia at home in the World Cup qualification play-offs.

Bellamy also held talks to move to Burnley in the summer until deciding not to take the role, and that saga is still fresh in the mind of supporters.

Serbia v Greece tips

Greece have a promising crop of players coming through and can be backed to get their Nations League campaign off to a good start.

Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Christos Tzolis of Arsenal and Brighton’s Charalampos Kostoulas are among the forward players who look set to lead their country into a decent period of success.

They travel to Serbia, who only won four of their eight qualifiers – pipped to second place in England’s group by Albania – and have lost three of their four friendlies since.
