There was plenty of drama across the penultimate round of fixtures in the Premier League with West Ham's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle leaving them on the verge of relegation.
After the 3-1 loss at St James’ Park on Sunday, the Hammers are relying on Chelsea to beat Tottenham on Tuesday to take the relegation scrap into the final day.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa confirmed a top-five finish with an impressive victory over Liverpool on Friday, but Brighton’s hopes of European football next season took a hit with a late defeat at Leeds.
Here is our team of the week for Gameweek 37.
Goalkeeper – Karl Darlow (Leeds United)
The only keeper to so far keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 37, Karl Darlow will have been very pleased with his afternoon’s work in Leeds’ 1-0 win over Brighton.
Darlow made a total of seven saves at Elland Road to keep the Seagulls out, including when at full stretch to deny Pascal Gross just before half-time.
Defender – Jaka Bijol (Leeds United)
As Leeds dealt with everything Brighton threw at them on Sunday, Jaka Bijol was outstanding for the Whites at the back.
The Slovenian made a total of 12 clearances and blocked two shots to ensure Daniel Farke’s side kept a clean sheet, providing the solid platform for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to strike at the other end late on.
Defender – Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
Luke Shaw scored his first goal of the season and only his fifth in a Manchester United shirt to get his side up and running against Nottingham Forest.
It was a fine finish into the bottom corner from the left-back, who is hoping for an England recall for the World Cup this summer after a consistent campaign at club level.
Defender – Lutsharel Geertruida (Sunderland)
Sunderland picked up just their fifth away win of the season with a 3-1 success at Everton, as the Black Cats scored three times in the second half at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
They had to soak up a fair bit of pressure from the Toffees and Lutsharel Geertruida was key to their defensive work as he helped to keep Iliman Ndiaye and Beto largely quiet throughout.
Defender – Sven Botman (Newcastle United)
Newcastle United’s comfortable victory over relegation-threatened West Ham was a satisfying final result at St James’ Park for the Magpies in what has been an overall underwhelming season.
Much of the focus was on on Kieran Trippier at the back for Newcastle in his final home game before his summer exit, but Sven Botman was the hosts’ outstanding defender against the Hammers, ending the match having made four interceptions, six clearances and blocking one shot.
Midfielder – John McGinn (Aston Villa)
Aston Villa turned in an excellent display to confirm their place in the Champions League for next season, beating a limp Liverpool side on Friday night at a raucous Villa Park.
John McGinn was at the heart of much of their best attacking play and the Scotland midfielder capped a fine individual display with the fourth goal in the 4-2 win – a delightful curled effort from the right that flew into the top corner.
Midfielder – Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
Crystal Palace were denied victory at Brentford by a late equaliser from Dango Ouattara, but Adam Wharton will still treasure the occasion as the Palace midfielder scored his first goal for the club.
Wharton’s 52nd-minute strike put the Eagles 2-1 up at the GTech Community Stadium and he was a threat going forward all afternoon, having four shots in total and making four key passes.
Midfielder – Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)
Another inclusion in the team of the week for Bruno Fernandes as the Portuguese ace continues to pull the strings for Manchester United.
Fernandes equalled the Premier League record for assists in a season, registering his 20th when his cross from the right was turned home by Bryan Mbeumo.
The United skipper is now level with Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne and still has one more game to try and beat the record.
Forward – Dango Ouattara (Brentford)
Outtara took his tally for the season to seven with a brace against Crystal Palace, helping Brentford stay on course for a top-eight finish and a European place.
Outtara’s first goal on Sunday was fortunate as Jaydee Canvot’s attempted headed clearance struck him in the face before going in.
His second goal – a close-range header – earned the Bees a point and he ended the match with a tally of five shots in total, three of which were on target.
Forward – Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
Ollie Watkins was one of Aston Villa’s standout performers in their win over Liverpool, netting twice to move him on to 14 league goals for the campaign.
Watkins gave Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the run-around for much of Friday’s contest and he probably should have had a hat-trick after registering six shots in total, five on target, in the 4-2 victory.
Forward – William Osula (Newcastle United)
The third player in the team of the week to score twice over the weekend, Newcastle United’s William Osula was the hero on Sunday for the Magpies as they inflicted a damaging defeat on West Ham.
Osula now has seven league goals this season following his well-taken double at St James’ Park.
