Gold Cup tips and predictions

A high-class field of 11 runners goes to post for this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, where Iknowthewayurthinking  bids to defend his crown after a poor season. Strong challengers include Gaelic Warrior and The Jukebox Man.

The Jukebox Man looks to maintain unbeaten record as favourite

Gold Cup favourite The Jukebox Man brings a fascinating profile into the race and looks a serious contender for Ben Pauling. The eight-year-old remains unbeaten over fences and has quickly developed into one of the most exciting staying chasers in training.

His rise through the ranks has been impressive, culminating in a brilliant victory in the King George VI Chase at Kempton earlier this season, beating both Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie, who according to the betting are his main dangers once again.

This is a different task though given it being over further and at Cheltenham which is a completely different track to Kempton.

Still his credentials are there for all to see, and he should be up there to lay down a challenge, but he may find one too good on this occasion.

Selection: Gaelic Warrior @ 4/1

Gaelic Warrior heads into the Cheltenham Gold Cup as one of the most talented horses in the field and a leading contender for Willie Mullins.

The eight-year-old has built an excellent record over fences, winning six of his 12 starts and proving himself at the highest level across a range of trips.

His versatility has been one of his greatest strengths, having shown top-class form from two miles up to three miles, including major Grade 1 victories.

Last season he demonstrated his stamina when landing the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree over 3m1f, confirming he stays on strongly.

His latest run saw him finish second to Fact To File in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, where he ran a huge race and finished ahead of previous two-time Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs. That performance reads extremely well as that looked a strong race.

Before that he finished a very close third in the King George, behind The Jukebox Man, and with an extra two furlongs he should be capable of reversing that form.

Next Best: Firefox @ 33/1

Firefox arrives at Cheltenham as a steadily improving chaser for Gordon Elliott and could represent solid each-way value in the Gold Cup.

The eight-year-old has progressed nicely over fences, particularly as his stamina has been tested over longer distances.

Earlier in his chasing career he showed plenty of promise over shorter trips, but his performances have improved notably as he has stepped up in distance.

His fourth-place finish in the Irish Gold Cup last time out was a particularly encouraging run. Competing against some of the best staying chasers in training on his first start over three miles, he stayed on well and showed he belongs at the highest level.

That performance suggested the Gold Cup trip will suit him even better and  there could be improvement to come.
