13:20 Triumph Hurdle

Friday was always likely to be the day that defined my punting week and highlighted both the perils and the opportunities of ante‑post betting.

Having been confident from an early stage that Narciso Has would be the answer to the Triumph, the news of his setback did not go down well. It also leaves the race with a very open look, with Willie Mullins now robbed of his standout horse and seemingly unleashing en masse his remaining hopes – most of whom have had one run in France and one in Ireland. Sorting them out looks quite problematic, but preference is just for PROACTIF 9/2 , who won at Auteuil in September and then beat Macho Man at Fairyhouse. Crucially, he looked to know his job well, whereas Selma De Vary appeared very keen and may need to be dropped out to get up the hill.

14:40 Mares’ Chase

The Dan Skelton-trained PANIC ATTACK 13/5 has enjoyed a fabulous season and looks more than capable of serving it up to Willie Mullins’ Dinoblue, who bids for back-to-back wins in the Grade 2 Mares’ Chase.

The 10-year-old has rattled off a perfect hat-trick this season, making it four wins in her last five starts, with victories in the Paddy Power Gold Cup here in November, the Coral Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy) at Newbury and a facile success in mares’ only company back at the Berkshire track in January.

She’s gone from a mark of 135 to 147 this season, which still leaves her a fair bit to find with the 159-rated Dinoblue, who will be conceding 3lb.

However, confidence in the Skelton camp is high – her owner Bryan Drew – already successful on Tuesday with Madara – certain she was his best chance of a winner this week.

16:00 Cheltenham Gold Cup

GAELIC WARRIOR 3/1  heads into the Cheltenham Gold Cup as one of the most talented horses in the field and a leading contender for Willie Mullins.  The eight-year-old has built an excellent record over fences, winning six of his 12 starts and proving himself at the highest level across a range of trips.  His versatility has been one of his greatest strengths, having shown top-class form from two miles up to three miles, including major Grade 1 victories.

Last season he demonstrated his stamina when landing the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree over 3m1f, confirming he stays on strongly. His latest run saw him finish second to Fact To File in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, where he ran a huge race and finished ahead of previous two-time Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs. That performance reads extremely well as that looked a strong race.  Before that he finished a very close third in the King George, behind The Jukebox Man, and with an extra two furlongs he should be capable of reversing that form.
