Finally, we have arrived: the 2026-27 NFL season kicks off tomorrow night at Lumen Field in Seattle, 8:20 p.m. EST, for a Super Bowl rematch between the New England Patriots and the champion Seahawks.
The Seahawks will unveil their championship banner to start things off (the Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13 in February).
Then the focus turns to the showdown itself – especially on Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye, who according to the NFL odds at Betway is +1000 in regular season MVP futures, behind Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills (+650), Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens (+800) and Joe Burrow of the Cincinatti Bengals (+850).
Maye’s in his third season, but just his second as an established starter. Was last season an anomaly, with Maye representing the next generation of star NFL QBs, or is he the real deal, on a level with veteran guys like Allen and Jackson, and the L.A. Rams’ Matthew Stafford (+1200), who won the MVP award last season?
Maye was sacked six times in the Super Bowl, so eyes are going to be on that – can the Patriots solve Seattle’s pressure packages under coach Mike Macdonald?
And is that countered at all by the new weapons Maye has at his disposal – led by A.J. Brown, a physical, game-changing receiver, who, along with Romeo Doubs, replaces Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte?
And how will the Seattle running game look now that Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III has moved on (off to the Kansas City Chiefs), with rookie Jadarian Price now the centrepiece in that backfield?
New offensive coordinator Brian Fleury is keeping Seattle’s wide-zone foundation, so we’ll have to see how his in-game play calling impacts Price’s production in Game 1.
Seahawks’ QB Sam Darnold was third in the NFL in interceptions last season (14), although he didn’t throw one in the Super Bowl. What are we going to see out of him tomorrow night?
The Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to terms on a four-year, $135 million contract extension yesterday, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history (eclipsing the $132 million extension that the Seahawks’ Devon Witherspoon received last month).
Gonzalez’s contract was the biggest question facing the Patriots going into Week 1. Getting that out of the way is a huge plus.
If I am focusing on key matchups, it would have to be Maye versus Macdonald’s defence; how the Patriots’ offensive line holds up against the Seahawks’ pass rush; and Brown versus Witherspoon- how Seattle can prevent Brown from controlling third downs and out-battling the Seahawks’ secondary with contested catches.

In the NFL betting at Betway, the Seahawks are -190 moneyline favourites at home, with the Patriots at +150. Seattle is a 3.5-point favourite at -105, while New England is +3.5 at -115. The total is 44.5 points, with the over and under both priced at -110. The spread suggests a competitive game, with the Patriots at +3.5, indicating stronger interest in New England at that number.

Seattle excelled against the spread last season, at 14-5, while New England was 13-6-1. That included the Super Bowl, where the Seahawks covered comfortably (they closed as five-point favourites).
Another interesting note – the Patriots were 8-0 away from Foxborough last season, adding another road victory in the playoffs – absolute road warriors. They were 7-2 ATS on the road as well.

I’m leaning strongly toward Seattle to begin my NFL picks for the season, particularly ATS -3.5 (-105). The Seahawks have the defensive and home-field advantages, along with the edge on special teams.
Jason Myers is the more experienced and dependable kicker, having made a Super Bowl-record five field goals against New England.
Patriots kicker Andy Borregales had a solid rookie season but converted only four-of-six postseason attempts.
Seattle also has one of the NFL’s top punters in Michael Dickson, who averaged 49.0 yards per punt last season. New England, meanwhile, will be without Bryce Baringer, who is on injured reserve.
I’m also taking the under 44.5 at -110, with both defences having finished among the NFL’s best last season. That Seattle unit held the Patriots to zero points through three quarters of the Super Bowl. Seattle is breaking in a new running back. Plus, I worry about Darnold’s tendency to throw picks.
Feels like a 24-20 Seattle win, or thereabouts, so I’ll go over 23.5 Seattle total points (-125).
