Usman v Masvidal odds:

Saturday night’s massive card at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi now has a main event to match.

After coronavirus forced Gilbert Burns to pull out of his title shot with Kamaru Usman, the UFC welterweight champion will now take on Jorge Masvidal – one of the company’s biggest stars – who has taken the fight on just six days’ notice.

The champion is   to successfully defend his title, while Masvidal is the underdog to take the belt.

Usman v Masvidal prediction:

Masvidal earned this shot, along with plenty of fans, by stopping Darren Till, Ben Askren and Nate Diaz in his last three fights, the first two of which were dramatic one-shot knockouts.

‘Gamebred’ has the power to stop anyone, and although he’ll be short of preparation for this massive fight, it’s hard to see that having too much of an effect on a man who made his name in backyard brawls.

Standing in his way, however, is a formidable champion.

Usman is unbeaten in 11 UFC fights and captured the title by thoroughly dominating Tyron Woodley for five rounds at UFC 235 in March 2019.

While he has always been recognised as an elite wrestler, Usman’s stand-up has shown real improvement in the past couple of years.

He proved that by knocking out Colby Covington in the fifth round of a slugfest in his first welterweight title defence last December.

Usman also has a phenomenal chin. He was caught clean on a few occasions by Covington and hardly looked shaken.

Masvidal’s power should be feared, though, and the champion would be foolish to allow the challenger to test his chin on too many occasions.

Instead, he should get back to basics and use his wrestling here.

Usman once took down Rafael dos Anjos 12 times in one fight, and he should be able to use that ability to close the distance and nullify Masvidal’s dangerous striking.

Usman is currently to win, though that price doesn’t offer much value.

Instead, it’s worth backing him to grind it out and win by decision at .

Eight of Usman’s last 10 fights have gone the distance, while 10 of Masvidal’s 13 career defeats have come on points.
