The favourites

Serena Williams heads the betting for the US Open, but she isn’t worth backing.

The 37-year-old hasn’t won a Grand Slam since January 2017, regularly running out of stamina in the latter stages.

She hasn’t won this title since 2014.

Simona Halep has been quiet since winning Wimbledon in July, but she has more of a chance than Williams.

The 27-year-old reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of this competition in 2015 and 2016, and has reached the last eight in six of her last 10 slams – a consistent record given the unpredictability of the women’s game.

Best of the rest

The field is wide open, with any number of players outside the top two capable of lifting the title.

One to watch is Bianca Andreescu .

The 19-year-old won the Rogers Cup earlier this month after Serena Williams retired in the final, having also won the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year.

She has beaten Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber, Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova on her way to those victories.

The Canadian has never progressed beyond the second round of a slam, but that form suggests she has every chance this week.

Ashleigh Barty won the women’s doubles title here last season, and also has to be in contention after a stellar year.
