Spirit set to rise in Betway Insider Handicap

Nine of the 10 runners finished in the first three last time out - we are dealing with a field full of in-form horses

Newmarket’s great card on Saturday continues with the Betway Insider Handicap.

And although the numbers suggest this isn’t quite as competitive as some of the other races on the day, the fact that nine of the 10 runners finished in the first three last time out means we are dealing with a field full of in-form horses.

It will be interesting to see how Akeed Champion performs for the rest of the season.

The Richard Fahey-trained runner shed his maiden tag at the sixth time of asking last time out at Redcar on soft ground having previously finished as runner up on three occasions.

The fact that we’ve seen him run against so many horses means we can figure out how generous his handicap mark of 80 is. The best guide may be his 3/4 length second to Khalaas a couple of starts ago.

That runner has since been beaten in two handicaps off marks in the low 80s suggesting Akeed Champion doesn’t have much in hand off 80.

The one who stands out here is another who won a maiden last time out despite already being given a handicap mark and that is Mystical Spirit.

He has been raised 2lbs for an eight-length victory and while he didn’t achieve much in that victory, a look back at some of his other maiden form suggests he’s very well treated off 78.

On his debut he ran the experienced Lear’s Rock close and that horse now operates off 82 and on his third start he was only a neck behind Inexorable Tide who has since beaten two subsequent winners easily off a mark of 77.

On his next start he was beaten only three lengths over a trip too far on ground that was too soft yet the horses in front are now all rated in the high 80s.

This looks to be his trip and he can beat more exposed rivals.

Second place special: Betway will refund losing bets on selected races up to £25 if your horse finishes second and is beaten by less than a length. Terms and conditions apply.
