Monday racing tips: Winged Messenger to swoop

Phill Anderson's tips for Monday include selections from Fairyhouse, Hamilton and Bath.

Racing comes back down to earth after the top-class action we were treated to over the weekend but there are still five meetings to get stuck into between the UK and Ireland today, mixing Flat and NH. We have four selections from three meetings, including in the feature sprint handicap at Bath.

WINGED MESSENGER @ 5/6 (Hamilton 3.10)

SHANNON ROYALE @ 8/13 (Fairyhouse 3.50)

UMMING N’ AHING @ 9/1 (Bath 4.32)

ZEFIRO DODVILLE @ 11/10 (Fairyhouse 5.20)

Umming to be decisive

The feature handicap at Bath is the Best Prices Guaranteed Daily At Vickers.Bet Handicap over 5f and it is very open looking. The ground is soft and it could be worth taking an each-way chance on Bill Turner’s soft ground specialist UMMING N’ AHING 9/1 coming back to winning ways.

He was a three-time winner over this trip on easy ground earlier in the season and ran a fine race over 6f at Chester last time. He has a nice low draw on this turning track and the return to this trip will suit. Today’s rider Gina Mangan has won on him twice already.

Winged to swoop

At Hamilton in the Molton Brown At Hamilton Park EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes over 5f, Julie Camacho’s WINGED MESSENGER 5/6 looks to be the one to beat after a terrific run from a wide draw at Chester last time.

He probably ran into a decent type that day and his effort can be marked up on account of being trapped wide at the Roodee, so he should be able to go one better here under Ben Curtis. Adrian Nicholls’ consistent Ingleby Archie and Kevin Ryan’s once-raced Star Mind are his main dangers.

Royale to be regal

The Irish jumps season is beginning to crank up a notch, with some decent young horses starting to resurface. At Fairyhouse, there are two such horses re-appearing for the Gordon Elliott stable and both should score at this local track where he does well.

Firstly, the Bet Responsibly At Novibet Maiden Hurdle over two-and-a-half miles should go the way of the trainer’s first-string SHANNON ROYALE 8/13 under stable jockey Jack Kennedy. This gelding by Walk In The Park was sold for a pricey £300,000 after only finishing second in a point-to-point on debut last year but did win a Clonmel bumper in good style on his second start for the Elliott yard in April this year. That was on heavy ground, so today’s conditions will hold no fears for him and the form of that race is solid. He should be good enough to make a winning start over hurdles.

Dodville to do the business

In the finale, Bet Builder At Novibet (Ladies Pro/Am) INH Flat Race, Elliott’s ZEFIRO DODVILLE 11/10 can make a successful racecourse debut.

This French-bred gelding won his sole point-to-point start for renowned producer Colin Bowe last year and has been given plenty of time to mature before being asked to step onto the racecourse.

He has the services of top female amateur Aine O’Connor in the saddle and this doesn’t look the strongest of bumpers, so he can make a winning transition into this sphere. Unusually, there is no Willie Mullins runner in this and that makes it more straightforward.
