Glorious Goodwood day two: Star set to shine over marathon trip

Gabrial's Star can make up for luckless season in Goodwood Stakes, while there should be some cracking bets at big prices elsewhere on the card

Another drying day at Goodwood should ensure perfect racing ground by Wednesday, leaving most races wide open.

The Goodwood Stakes, one of the longest races of the flat calendar, gets us under way. This handicap is run over 2m5f and there is some guesswork involved in most horses’ chances of staying the trip. Gabrial’s Star has spent most of his career over middle distances, but was staying on in the Chester Cup – over 3f shorter – as well as anything in May and there should be just about enough juice left in the ground for him to show his best form.

Over the winter on the all weather he was just behind some big improvers such as John Reel, Luv U Whatever and Dream Child and he has run well in some big handicaps this season without things ever quite dropping his way. Perhaps the biggest question mark is the lack of headgear here – he’s worn cheekpieces, a visor or blinkers on 27 of his 35 starts and his trainer’s judgement will just have to be trusted on that one.

William Of Orange is sure to be popular up in trip after running on late over 2m at York last time, but he has now been beaten on all three starts this term. He should run well but appears to have his quirks and could be over bet here.

Chance a big Run from Pride in 7f handicap

There looks to be no value in this year’s Sussex Stakes after the withdrawal of Gleneagles so the next best betting opportunity on Wednesday should come in the big 7f handicap at the end of the card. Twenty runners are due to go to post and, as the ground dries out, a low draw is going to become more important. That is especially the case over this trip where the effect of the draw is most pronounced.

It could be worth taking a bit of a chance here on Run With Pride. He is not the most consistent runner in this field but has finished second in some decent races this year and on another couple of occasions he has been unlucky not to go close. He is well drawn in stall 6 and in a big field here it could be the day where it all comes together and he wins at a big price.

Disegno can take advantage of step up in trip

The Gordon Stakes at 2.35 is nicely framed at the moment with 10 runners and it looks worth opposing Highland Reel after a poor performance over this trip in the Irish Derby last time out. Sir Michael Stoute has had a bit of an in-and-out season but his Disegno looks the one here up in trip having run over 10f at Royal Ascot. His early season form when not far behind Golden Horn really stands out and he did best of those held up behind Time Test at Royal Ascot. He seems to keep on bumping into big improvers but this time around he should be the big improver over this trip.
