Gary Moore: Sire De Grugy all set for Exeter next week

In his exclusive blog, the trainer says the Haldon Gold Cup is the ideal starting point for the nine-year-old

Sire De Grugy enjoyed a gallop around Lingfield on Monday under the supervision of the Princess Royal – and Jamie, of course! – and I can report that he’s exactly where I want him to be at this stage of the season.

He has continued to please us a lot over the last few weeks and is ready to go now that the rain has started to fall.

The plan is very much to kick off his campaign in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter next Tuesday as long as the ground stays soft.

The race looks the ideal starting point for him and, unless it dramatically dries up everywhere, that’s where he’ll start.

If, for some reason, he wasn’t to go to Exeter, I suppose we could find a handicap for him somewhere.

However, if I’m honest, I’m not too keen to go down that route.

I don’t really like looking too far ahead, but the obvious next target for us, after Exeter, would be the Tingle Creek at Sandown.

That, together with another tilt at the Betway Champion Chase, is a long way away with (hopefully!) plenty of water to pass under the bridge before then.
