The View of the Opposition: Chelsea v West Ham
We provide analysis and best bets as the Hammers head to Stamford Bridge for what always proves to be a feisty London derby.
West Ham have not won at Stamford Bridge since September 2002.
But, much like Tottenham discovered last weekend, now is the perfect time to end such hoodoos against the Blues.
Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four now look forlorn, having won just three of 10 league games in 2018 and lost five of their last seven.
They’ve only kept a single clean sheet during that run – against rock-bottom West Brom who are also the league’s joint-lowest scorers.
So the Hammers, who took a huge stride towards safety with a thumping 3-0 win over Southampton last time out, should fancy their chances of claiming at least a point, particularly considering that they have scored in eight consecutive Premier League away games.
If they are to find the net, then one player stands out as the most likely candidate.
Marko Arnautovic got his first goal for West Ham in the reverse fixture back in December, beginning a run of nine in 13 league games.
Having returned to form with a brace against the Saints – and with Michail Antonio ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury – he is sure to lead the line and find himself on the end of most chances the visitors create.
Whatever the score, this is a derby that always proves to be feisty.
A total of seven bookings when these two played each other at the London Stadium means there have now been 43 yellows and one red in the last eight meetings between these sides.
Over 5.5 on Sunday, then, shouldn’t be too much to ask.
