Premier League tips: Best bets for Man City v Chelsea

Enda McElhinney offers his tips for Saturday's Premier League clash between Pep Guardiola's title chasers and Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea side.

Manchester City will look to extend their winning streak to 12 games when they host Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium in Saturday’s late Premier League fixture.

Best Bets

Man City to win & Both Teams to Score /
Kevin De Bruyne to assist 1+ Goal  /
Julian Alvarez to score the first goal /

Citizens are timing their run to perfection

Pep Guardiola’s side have not dropped points at home very often this season, but will feel as though they slipped up when Chelsea came from 3-2 and 4-3 down to claim a draw against them at Stamford Bridge in November.

Otherwise, City have dominated this fixture over the last few years with six wins from the last seven meetings.

They returned to Manchester in midweek having established a handy 3-1 first-leg lead in their Champions League last-16 tie with FC Copenhagen.

The victory came at a cost as both Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva were forced off with injuries in Denmark.

They look set to join former Chelsea favourite Mateo Kovacic and his Croatian colleague Josko Gvardiol on the sidelines.

But it has not all been bad news for Guardiola on the injury front with Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne, Manuel Akanji and John Stones all having returned to action recently.

Chelsea, meanwhile, look set to be without the services of key defender Thiago Silva, who sustained a groin injury in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Monday.

Levi Colwill is ready to step back into the back four, but Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Reece James are still absent from a defence that has conceded 10 goals across their last four outings.

City have kept only two clean sheets in their last eight league games at the Etihad so there is plenty of encouragement to back Chelsea to score in a home win.

Blues must beware assist king Kevin

De Bruyne has been in superb form since returning from injury and has now assisted a goal in all four of City’s league games in 2024 despite only starting two of them.

Saturday’s game represents his chance to become just the 11th different player to assist a goal on five or more consecutive appearances in the Premier League.

Although the Belgian has set up only one goal in 13 previous top-flight games against his former employers, this game could see him add to his haul of 66 Premier League assists at the Etihad Stadium.

Argentina ace can break the ice

Julian Alvarez settled the corresponding fixture between these sides last season when he scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute.

The former River Plate star’s penchant for breaking the deadlock has been evident again this term with five of his eight Premier League strikes opening the scoring.

The Argentinean was rested from the City line-up in midweek, but has started all 23 of City’s top flight games this term — an indication that Guardiola wanted to keep him fresh for Saturday’s game.
