League Two play-off final tips for Newport v Tranmere

Here are Will Rook‘s football tips for Newport v Tranmere on Saturday.

Newport to win on penalties

There were three draws over the four semi-final matches, with Tranmere’s 1-0 win at home to 10-man Forest Green in the first leg the only victory.

That was only Rovers’ second win in nine matches, while Newport have drawn their last three games in a 12-match unbeaten run.

The two sides have drawn three of their last four meetings and with so much at stake, it’s likely to be a cagey affair on Saturday.

Having already beaten Mansfield on penalties in the semi-final, though, I’m siding with Newport in a shoot-out.

Under 2.5 goals

There has been just one goal in the two meetings between Tranmere and Newport this term.

The two sides scored just 63 and 59 times respectively over the course of the season – fewer than any other top-seven sides.

Ollie Banks to be carded

Banks picked up his 15th booking of the season in all competitions in Tranmere’s play-off semi-final second leg at Forest Green.

Of those cards, 13 have come in the league – the equal-most of any player in the division.

James Norwood to be carded

Norwood isn’t a stranger to the nasty side of the game.

The striker has picked up 11 bookings over the course of the season and was lucky to escape without a caution in the second leg at Forest Green after celebrating his goal in front of the opposition fans.

Over 2.5 Newport cards

Newport aren’t afraid to exert their physicality when there’s a lot on the line.

The Exiles picked up six yellow cards in their semi-final second leg away to Mansfield and it would be no surprise to see a few more at Wembley this weekend.
