FA Cup tips: Best bets for Man Utd v Liverpool

Our tips for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final clash at Old Trafford include a win for the visitors.

Two of the biggest rivals in English football meet in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, when Manchester United and Liverpool do battle at Old Trafford.

The hosts have had longer to prepare, with Liverpool involved in European action on Thursday, but the form guide suggests it’s the Merseysiders who will progress to the last four.

It’s nine games unbeaten in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s men going into Sunday, with United having to find another gear if they are to knock out their rivals from down the East Lancs Road.

Best bets

Liverpool to win and both teams to score /
Darwin Nunez 2+ shots on target /
Alexis Mac Allister to score or to assist /

Rivals will slug it out

This season’s only meeting so far between the two teams was a damp squib at Anfield, with the sides playing out a 0-0 Premier League draw at Anfield.

That was a rarity though and neither team will want the tie to go into extra-time and penalties, so expect fireworks from the off.

Unpredictable is a word often used to describe Man Utd this season, with the Red Devils heading into Sunday’s game having won two and lost two of their last four games in all competitions.

Despite being hit by a number of injuries in recent months, Liverpool’s form has been impressive – highlighted in the high-octane draw with Man City last weekend.

In Liverpool’s 45 games across four competitions this season, the Reds to win and both teams to score would have come in on 20 occasions.

Erik Ten Hag says Rasmus Hojlund, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be back in the United squad, having returned to training this week.

Klopp has revealed Mohamed Salah is fit to feature after feeling no ill effects from his runout on Thursday. Ibrahima Konate is doubtful, but Ryan Gravenberch is back in contention.

Nunez can cause Utd problems

He might not have got on the scoresheet, but the pundits were full of plaudits for Darwin Nunez after his performance against City.

The Uruguayan made life difficult all game long for John Stones and Manuel Akanji and the United centre-backs could be in for a torrid time on Sunday.

Nunez has 16 goals to his name this season and although a lot has been made of his ‘chaotic’ style, his displays have gradually improved as the season has progressed.

The 24-year-old is third in the Premier League stats for shots on target this season, behind Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins, recording 37 from 28 matches.

Mac Allister pulling the strings

With the likes of Curtis Jones, Thiago and Dominic Szoboszlai having spells out this season, Alexis Mac Allister has often had the role of setting the tempo in the centre of midfield.

The World Cup winner has taken the bull by the horns in recent weeks, helping some of the younger players through some big games.

He has had a significant role to play in the last month, helping the Reds win the EFL Cup as well as collecting two big league results.

Mac Allister assisted Nunez for the dramatic winner at Nottingham Forest, before scoring from the spot against City last weekend.
