4 players to watch in the Bundesliga this weekend
From all-action midfielders to a marauding wing-back, these are the players you should be keeping your eye on this weekend.
Kerem Demirbay (Bayer Leverkusen)
Demirbay has struggled to make an impact at Leverkusen since his club-record transfer from Hoffenheim last summer, but has flourished since the league restarted.
The German international scored one goal and created two in Leverkusen’s first two matches back, a sign that he is adding final product to his energetic style.
His box-to-box dynamism provides the platform for Leverkusen’s electric attack, but he has the technical ability to link-up with Kai Havertz and the others, too.
Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich)
In the absence of Thiago, Goretzka’s controlling presence and versatility was vital to Bayern’s season-defining victory at Dortmund on Tuesday.
At the Allianz Arena, though, it is his goal output that has stood him out recently.
The German has scored six goals for Bayern this season, three of which have come in their last four home matches. An archetypal all-round midfielder, his partnership with Joshua Kimmich should see the leaders dominate their game against Dusseldorf on Saturday.
Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund)
Like Achraf Hakimi on the right-hand side, Guerreiro has flourished since Dortmund switched to a three-at-the-back system earlier in the season.
With license to dominate the left flank, the Portuguese international has gone to a new level. He has scored six goals in 13 appearances in 2020 and is bringing the best out of Julian Brandt, who plays just inside him.
Dortmund shouldn’t have much defending to do against Paderborn, so watch out for Guerreiro’s trademark late arrivals into the penalty area when the ball arrives from the right.
Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig)
Like Moussa Diaby at Leverkusen, Nkunku has been a revelation since leaving PSG for the Bundesliga last summer.
Unsurprisingly, considering Leipzig’s blueprint for players, the Frenchman is technically excellent and extremely creative. He ranks top for dribbles, second for key passes and fourth for shots per game in the Leipzig squad.
He has only scored four goals this season, but that will soon rise if he maintains this level of performance.
