Champions League tips: Best bets for Porto v Arsenal

William Maxwell's tips for Arsenal's first Champions League knock-out game since 2017 include a dominant performance from the Gunners with Bukayo Saka starring.

Gunners to continue fine form

Arsenal head to Porto having won five in a row, including 6-0 and 5-0 away wins across their last two. After a rough end to 2023, the Gunners seem to be peaking at the perfect time as they chase the Premier League title.

However, the way the Champions League is shaping up, Arsenal have to be considered serious contenders for a deep run. The fact that each of the last five sides to eliminate Porto in the knockouts of this competition have progressed to the final should also be a boost for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Porto come into this clash with a poor record against English sides in Europe and their recent 3-2 defeat to Arouca was a worry for their domestic prospects. While they’ve made it into the last 16, the fact they progressed ahead of Antwerp and Shakhtar Donetsk suggests they’ve not been tested all that well so far.

They lost home and away to a Barcelona side who are far from their best right now. The Gunners come storming into this clash with 21 goals across their last five, so they should secure another win.

Porto to blank again

Not only have the Gunners been racking up the goals, they’ve also conceded just twice in that five-game spell. After successive wins to nil in the league, they head into this Champions League clash looking strong at the back as well.

That could be a key factor in this clash, especially as Porto have a mixed record at home behind them. While they beat the two sides who finished below them at home, their other home games in this competition in 2023 saw them blank against Inter Milan and Barca.

The Gunners were fast starters in this competition in the group stage, scoring first in all six games and getting 12 first-half goals. With Arteta’s men buoyed from two fantastic first-half displays – scoring six unanswered goals across their last two first-halves – they can take control of this one early.

Porto seem to find it tough to break through against quality opposition, so Arsenal are good value for a win to nil at 13/8.

Saka in stellar form

Finally, no player in the Champions League this term can match Saka for goals and assists, with the winger racking up seven contributions already. He has taken to Europe’s top competition with ease, which should continue this week.

The Arsenal man has scored six times across his last four games, netting in each. He has a brace in his last two away trips and at 9/1 he’s a big price to make it three in a row. While the level of opposition does step up, Saka is a menace from open-play and seems to have nailed down penalties for himself, so back him for another brace in this trip.
