The NFL hasn\u2019t had an expansion franchise since the Houston Texans debuted in 2002. However, the league has continued to grow significantly since then, both in America and overseas.<\/p>\n
With the massive growth, talks of further expansion are always inevitable, but what do the fans actually want? To find out, our NFL betting<\/a> team commissioned a survey of 1,000 NFL fans in the US to get their thoughts.<\/p>\n According to the results, the most popular location for the NFL\u2019s next franchise is San Antonio, Texas. Despite the state already having two NFL teams in the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, 19% of those surveyed said they would like to see a team in the Alamo City.<\/p>\n San Antonio wasn\u2019t the only city in the Lone Star State to be put forward. Austin gained 14% of fan votes making it the joint 5th most popular location for expansion. Both Austin and Portland, Oregon received 136 votes each.<\/p>\n When looking at percentages, Oklahoma City also received 19% of the votes. However, OKC received 7 fewer total votes than San Antonio\u2019s 192, which made the city the second most popular location for the league\u2019s next franchise. The only \u201cBig Four\u201d team currently based in Oklahoma is the NBA\u2019s Oklahoma City Thunder who won a championship in 2025.<\/p>\n The third and fourth most popular cities for potential expansion were both locations that are no stranger to the National Football League.<\/p>\n The Rams played out of St. Louis from 1995 through the 2015 season before moving back to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, San Diego was the home of the Chargers from 1961 until 2016. 18% of NFL fans believe St. Louis should be home to an NFL team again, while 15% said the same of San Diego.<\/p>\n North of the border, Toronto has no NFL franchise but is home to three \u201cBig Four\u201d teams as well as the Canadian Football League\u2019s Toronto Argonauts. 11% of fans surveyed said they\u2019d like an NFL franchise to be based in Toronto, making it the most popular location outside the US.<\/p>\n The NFL international series has been a huge hit with fans and due to the success of the games, there are always murmurs of potential overseas expansion.
