It was on July 5 in Hamilton against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers that Ticats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell suffered a serious left ankle injury. The next day, Orlondo Steinauer, team president, announced that Mitchell had undergone successful surgery, a substantial loss for the team, since Mitchell had been enjoying a stellar season up to that point – 86-for-110 in passing for 1,107 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception.

In that Winnipeg game, he had led Hamilton to a 13-4 lead, going 18-for-29 for 228 yards and a touchdown, before the injury.

Many expected the Ticats season to go down the drain with the loss of Mitchell, but that hasn’t been the case.

They’re second to the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Division, going into their big game Sunday.

Hamilton never panicked. Instead of trying to replace Mitchell’s passing acumen, they balance their offence more around the run.

Quarterback Tre Ford’s mobility changed their offence. He’s tenth in the CFL in rushing, at 156 yards, for an average of 11.1 yards.

Their defence has been opportunistic, with timely stops and turnovers. I look at their offence – last in the CFL, with 2,039 yards – and I shake my head. Hamilton has become the most intriguing team in the CFL for bettors.

The Edmonton Elks are another positive surprise, sitting first in the West at 5-1. Their offence has been explosive, ranking fifth in the CFL with 2,394 total yards and second in rushing with 710 yards (118.3 per game). Quarterback Cody Fajardo has been a major reason why, ranking third in the league with 1,781 passing yards while completing 70% of his passes, with nine touchdowns against just four interceptions.

There still is a long way to go in the season, but the Elks to this point have gone from afterthought to Grey Cup contender.

Let’s set up the Week 8 games, starting tonight:

Edmonton Elks (5-1) versus Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-1), tonight, 9 p.m. EST, Mosaic Stadium, Regina. In CFL betting at Betway, Saskatchewan is -225 on the Moneyline, Edmonton +185. The Spread is Saskatchewan -4.5 (-110), Edmonton +4.5 (-110). Total is 56.5 (Over -115, Under -105).

Best bet: Edmonton +4.5. The Roughriders are at home, so they’ll win the game, I think, but it’s going to be a close one. Saskatchewan is coming off an emotional week after the death of linebacker Jayden Dalke in a car accident. The Elks are playing with confidence on both sides of the ball.

Calgary Stampeders (2-4) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-2), tomorrow, 8:30 p.m. EST, Princess Auto Stadium, Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers are the Moneyline favourite, -130 at Betway, with the Stampeders +110. The Spread is Winnipeg -1.5 (-110), Calgary +1.5 (-110). The Total is 59.5 (Over -115, Under -105).

Best bet: Winnipeg to win. The Stampeders put up points on offence (388.8 yards per game), but their defence has been the CFL’s worst, allowing a league-high 447.3 yards, 35.7 points and 16 touchdowns per game.

On Saturday, the Toronto Argonauts (2-4) are in B.C. to play the Lions (1-4), 7 p.m. EST, BC Place, Vancouver. At Betway, the Argos are Moneyline favourites at -188; the Lions are +150. Spread is Toronto -3.5 (-110), B.C. +3.5 (-110). Total is 57.5 (Over -110, Under -110).

Best bet: Toronto -3.5. The Lions will likely be without quarterback Nathan Rourke for multiple weeks, a huge hit offensively. The Argos’ Chad Kelly is one of the hottest QBs in the league – second in the CFL to Montreal’s Davis Alexander with 2,126 passing yards, and first in the league with 15 touchdown passes.

And on Sunday, the Tiger-Cats are in Montreal to play the Alouettes, 7 p.m. EST, Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium, Montreal. The Als are huge favourites on the Moneyline, at -550, the Ticats are +400. The Spread is Hamilton +10.5 (-115), Montreal -10.5 (-105). The Total is 56.5 (Over -115, Under -110).

Best bet: Hamilton +10.5. That spread is wild. Alexander is a superior QB (11 TDs, zero interceptions), and the Alouettes are at home, but Hamilton is the league’s best value team. That number is inflated, and I trust the Tiger-Cats to cover.

["GET
