Boxing tips: Our 5/2 pick for George Groves v Callum Smith

Jack Green is predicting victory for the super-middleweight champion in his boxing tips for Friday's World Boxing Super Series final.

Two world title belts and the Muhammad Ali Trophy will be on the line when George Groves and Callum Smith meet in the World Boxing Super Series final on Friday night.

WBA world champion Groves saw off Jamie Cox in a four-round slugfest last October, and then beat Chris Eubank Jr on points in a brilliant February fight to make it to this stage.

Smith has enjoyed a more serene run, winning comfortably by decision against Erik Skoglund and Nieky Holzken.

Those paths to the final epitomise these fighters’ careers to date.

Groves had to bounce back from three defeats in world title fights – twice to Carl Froch and once to Badou Jack – to make it to the point where he’s the A-side in massive fights.

The 30-year-old has done it the hard way, taking on the best of the best to become one of Britain’s finest most accomplished boxers.

Smith, meanwhile, is yet to face an elite fighter, with a first-round TKO win over Rocky Fielding in November 2015 arguably the most impressive victory on his perfect 24-0 record.

That gap in experience should prove crucial on Friday night in Jeddah.

Smith is a big, strong super middleweight, and he won’t be pushed around by the champion like Eubank Jr was.

He lacks the nous, however, to outbox Groves, who is a master at using his long reach to control the fight with his jab.

The Londoner memorably outboxed Froch for most of their first fight before he was controversially stopped in the ninth round, and he was also unlucky to lose a split decision to Jack in September 2015.

He’s looked fantastic ever since that defeat, and should come through this test providing the dislocated shoulder that he suffered against Eubank Jr has completely healed.

Both of these fighters have plenty of power, with a total of 37 knockout wins between them.

But given that three of Groves’ last five fights were on points and Smith hasn’t won inside the distance since 2016, a decision win looks the best bet at our boosted price of {ODDS:324643704:5/2}.
