Boxing tips: Best bets for Dubois v Hrgovic

Daniel Hill's selections for Saturday night's clash in Saudi Arabia include a win for the British fighter inside nine rounds.

Filip Hrgovic and Daniel Dubois clash in an intriguing contest in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night and it’s a bout that forms part of the unique Matchroom v Queensbury face-off.

The promotional rivals have each selected five fighters from their stable to compete at the Kingdom Arena and Hrgovic will be representing Eddie Hearn, with Dubois carrying the colours of Frank Warren.

The fight looks sure to prove an interesting battle and the betting has Hrgovic as the 2/5 favourtie. Triple D is rated a 2/1 chance and the draw is available at 16/1.

Londoner Dubois had a fierce reputation when knocking over limited opponents as he made hay in the heavyweight division, but Triple D’s rise to the top was derailed by Joe Joyce in 2020.

Joyce may have been exposed by Zhelli Zhang since, but at the time the Puntney puncher was ripping through the big-hitting division. Defeat to undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk followed for Dubois, but it’s worth remembering that the Greenwich man had the Ukrainian great on the canvas in that contest, even if the body blow was ruled an illegal shot.

Dubois has suffered two defeats in his career, but they have come against top-level opponents and Dynamite hasn’t lost any of his punch power.

Hrgovic was another big hitter tipped for the top when going 16 fights unbeaten, but the heat around the Croatian has cooled of late.

Zhang is the only fighter of any note on Hrga’s card and the 31-year-old found himself on the deck when taking on Big Bang in 2022.

Hrgovic rallied to get the decision of the judges in that bout, but that was a fairly fortunate victory and the power of the Chinese star certainly had the Croatian’s attention.

Dubois carries hits hard enough to be a serious threat to the suspect Hrga chin, and while Hrgovic will be aware of Triple D’s strengths, that may lead to the 31-year-old going into his shell with the worry of being tagged by the Londoner.

However the fight plays out, Dubois looks to have more than one avenue to success and the prices appear to underrate the chances of the Greenwich man winning what could turn out to be a world title contest.

Both fighters will know that a stoppage triumph is their most likely route to victory in Saudi Arabia, and with the duo having question marks over their durability, going under 8.5 rounds looks another way to attack the Kingdom Arena clash.
