Boxing tips: Best bets for Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou

Adrian Mills offers his tips for Friday night's heavyweight clash in Riyadh, with a stunning win for the underdog on the cards.

There is another cracking night of boxing in Saudi Arabia on Friday and the Riyahd action is headlined by the heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou.

Ngannou went mighty close to shocking the boxing world when dropping WBC champion and unbeaten heavyweight star Tyson Fury in October and the Predator now has his sights set on Joshua in just his second professional bout.

AJ has put together a three-fight winning streak since a pair of defeats to Oleksandr Usyk and the British boxer is looking to move back into world title contention.

Joshua is the red-hot 2/7 favourite in Riyadh, with Ngannou an 11/4 chance and it will be interesting to see how things play out in Saudi Arabia.

Sparks could fly in heavyweight clash

The bout between Joshua and Ngannou has been labeled as knockout chaos and the fight looks likely to live up to that billing.

AJ has put together a three-fight winning run and, while the form of wins over Jermaine Franklin, Otto Wallin and Robert Helenius is questionable, the British boxer did score two knockout victories.

Joshua’s strengths lie in his power and physique and trainer Ben Davison has hinted that AJ will look to use those attributes by going on the front foot against Ngannou.

If that does prove to be the case, Ngannou will meet fire with fire and the Predator doesn’t have the boxing skills to keep the fight at range or stay out of the Watford man’s way.

That doesn’t mean that Joshua will simply blow the Cameroonian away and the Predator showed that he carries plenty of power when dropping Fury when that pair met in Saudi Arabia

Joshua was dropped, stopped and shocked by Andy Ruiz, the Watford man was floored by Wladimir Klitschko and there has been clear vulnerability to power in contests against Usyk and Dillian Whyte.

This is likely to be two fighters standing toe-to-toe and slugging it out and backing the fight not to go beyond the sixth round looks a wise wager.

Ngannou can stun more experienced rival

Joshua appeared an explosive, powerful and physically imposing heavyweight in the early stages of his career, but nearly all of the 34-year-old’s impressive performances have come against vastly inferior opposition and the Watford fighter has lost three of his last eight bouts.

Wins over Wallin and Helenius represent low-level form and it’s worth remembering that the victory over Franklin wasn’t exactly impressive.

Those three victories followed two comprehensive defeats to Usyk and AJ was fortunate to avoid a stoppage loss to the Ukrainian in the first meeting between the pair.

Ngannou has had just one professional boxing contest, but he showed plenty of power and aggression in that sole fight against Fury, who many regard as the best boxer in the division.

The Predator remains an unknown quantity, but he may prove even better than what we saw in the Fury fight and backing the 37-year-old to win by stoppage looks a good value play.
